I am a fan of ftp installs (did it with past Suse releases), and would like to know whether it is possible to do it with Suse 10.0. Has anyone tried it yet?
I tried using the first installation cd and choosing ftp install, but wasn't sure which directory to point the installer to. Anyone have any pointers?
As far as I aware, the ftp install is not available yet. It is likely to be made available when SuSE 10 is considered polished enough to become the official released version, which is not yet! Novell still recommend 9.3 as the official released version.
For now, if you want to use version 10 (which is still in beta) you'll need to download the iso images and use them.
Linux 10.0, the first product of the recently launched openSUSE project, has been released: "I'm glad to announce the final version (aka the Goldmaster) of SUSE Linux 10.0. Developing 10.0 as part of the openSUSE project with an open Bugzilla was a new and great experience. Thanks a lot to everybody that contributed in testing, reporting and fixing bugs, discussions etc. The mirrors are still downloading all the files and it will take a few days until all are synced.
i would stay away from ftp installs for a bit, just because all the mirrors and suse would be overloaded at the moment. having torrents is a good idea by suse instead of downloading from the sites. it would be good if you can download the isos from using bittorrent else i think next week would be a good idea for ftp installs when the traffic would have become less.
