First of all: Yast allows to select 32-bit or 64-bit
Second: Firefox is a "special case" so many users could not understand that 32-bit plugins will not work with with 64-bit Firefox, (64-bit firefox was default in SuSE 9.2), that Novell decided to use 32-bit firefox on 64-bit SuSe 10.0 to avoid all the confusion. Still you will find a lot of posts asking why 32-bit plugins do not work with 64-bit Firefox.

I thought all application software was 32 bit.

Ohh this is only an example of confusion (see above).
I don't know, reading (and understanding basics at least) before installing OS would be advantegous?
Finally: not all software really will gain anything from 64-bit environement. So in some cases even you will have both 32-bit and 64-bit packages, it really does not mattter what you will install

Example: FireFox 1.07 installed.
YAST claims only FireFox 1.06 is available.

this has nothing to do with 32-bit or 64-bit dilemma
Default is version 1.0.6 but upgrade has already 1.0.7. And 1.0.7 should be installed (security reasons)
Reasons for the mistake might lay in your Yast config:
if installation media points to CD/DVD and security points to network resources then obviously you will see 1.0.6 and 1.0.7
You can install either 1.5 or 1.0.7. This is entirely up to you (SuSE provides both versions). Personally I had rendering problems with some pages using 1.5 so now I am back to 1.0.7.
This obviously has nothing to do with 64-bit or 32-bit architecture. FF 1.0.7 and 1.5 are available for both 32-bit and 64-bit arch.
Reading would really help
