SUSE 10 (64 bit) PC (AMD 64 3200+) YAST software versions?

Are 64 bit versions of SUSE 10.0 different for application software installations using YAST? I thought all application software was 32 bit.

Example: FireFox 1.07 installed.
YAST claims only FireFox 1.06 is available.

Firefox is at version 1.5.

YAST software source media set for several servers.

ftp: mirrors.kernal.org and http: packman

Please advise.

First of all: Yast allows to select 32-bit or 64-bit
Second: Firefox is a "special case" so many users could not understand that 32-bit plugins will not work with with 64-bit Firefox, (64-bit firefox was default in SuSE 9.2), that Novell decided to use 32-bit firefox on 64-bit SuSe 10.0 to avoid all the confusion. Still you will find a lot of posts asking why 32-bit plugins do not work with 64-bit Firefox.

Ohh this is only an example of confusion (see above).

I don't know, reading (and understanding basics at least) before installing OS would be advantegous?

Finally: not all software really will gain anything from 64-bit environement. So in some cases even you will have both 32-bit and 64-bit packages, it really does not mattter what you will install

this has nothing to do with 32-bit or 64-bit dilemma
Default is version 1.0.6 but upgrade has already 1.0.7. And 1.0.7 should be installed (security reasons)
Reasons for the mistake might lay in your Yast config:
if installation media points to CD/DVD and security points to network resources then obviously you will see 1.0.6 and 1.0.7

You can install either 1.5 or 1.0.7. This is entirely up to you (SuSE provides both versions). Personally I had rendering problems with some pages using 1.5 so now I am back to 1.0.7.

This obviously has nothing to do with 64-bit or 32-bit architecture. FF 1.0.7 and 1.5 are available for both 32-bit and 64-bit arch.

Reading would really help

Broch - a couple of your comments look a little less than patient. Please take care for future posting.

Also, at the top of this forum is a thread which has a large number of contributed YAST sources. I'd suggest installing them as many have more current software.
