Exclamation Suse 10.2 Not booting

Hello everyone,

I hope someone could help me here.
I just upgraded Suse 10.1 to 10.2 everything went fine the upgarde completed with no errors.

Next the system requires reboot to complete install so I did it. At boot up the system does memory and peripherals check and then just freezes. i thought maybe it was trying to boot from the CD so i removed that option for the BIOS made sure is only looking at the HD still nothing, so i wet back in and put back to the CD-ROM and put the Suse intall DVD, nothing. After trying this back and forth for about an hour i gave up and shut down the machine.

After a few hours i decided to look into it again. the settings in the BIOS were to boot from CD-ROM and the CD was in tehre suddenly the system booted and asked me if i wanted to run from HD or Install obviously i put HD. THen the system finished the installation and came up with no prob I tested a few apps and everyhting was working fine. So i figure everything is good. So i Rebooted, and now again I am in the same problem

Any ideas anybody?? Please help me.

Thank you

It's a possibility that your hard drive is getting ready to take a dump. Run some diags on it.

I don't think that is possible imean my HD is only about 1 year old it should still have a few years in it. And again is happening after i shutdown it doesn't want to reboot.

If it was the HD then i would assume that booting from the CD would be done with no prob. but i cant boot from anywhere and this just started happening right after i upgraded.

But since you mention it, cuold you let me know how i can run some diag on it?? not too familiar with Suse. trying to learn

Ahhh......

Found the reason. and thanks guys for answering, especially thanks cueman, you got me thinking something i don't usually do

The prob was a faulty fan!!!! my HDD's were overheating that is why after shutdown they would not want to boot up until they cool off.

But thanks and good thing this happened now i was able to catch on time before something worse occurred

Check this out:

http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm#DFT

There is an iso cd image you can download. I use this IBM drive fitness test on a lot of drives. It will definitely let you know if there is a problem. A one year old drive means little really, they can fail at any time.

I don't know about the overheating issue, I would think it would shut down or lock up when it got hot, not just on a reboot. I kind of doubt that is the culprit. Give those diags a try.

EDIT: I just downloaded that CD ISO image. It works great, just boot from your CD-ROM and the rest is pretty self explanatory.
