Suse 10.2: no usb-devices loaded, my usb-controller too old?

I have recently installed Suse 10.2 on my pc, but I cannot access any USB-devices such as my USB-external disc and my USB-tablet mouse. Little programs like usb-viewer complain that '/proc/var/usb/' doesn't exists. I have searched the internet for a solution and the only possible option I found was: usb-controller is too old, but he is still recognised. I have recently installed the newest kernel and searched for patches but it all doesn't worked out.
All the technical information in this Support.txt. I will appreciate all possible solutions,
