SUSE 10.2 and removable media

Hello,
I am experiencing a surprising problem that I did not face with either SUSE 9.1 or SUSE 9.3,

I am having problems with removable media.

Before upgrading to SUSE 10.2 I could easily plugin both my USB hard drive and USB pen drive quickly save files onto them and then take it to another computer and work on those files without a problem,

now here is how the situation is now:

I have two computers running opensuse 10.2,

I create a file on one computer (GIMP file) and then I insert the USB hard disk and then take it to the other computer to work.

I try opening it with GIMP and I get an error message.

Seeing this I then decided to try out my SD card, I saved the files on to that card then I took it to the computer and then once again I got the error message, I also would sometimes not see the files on there!!!

The only thing that seems to work is by USB pen drive.

I tried the same thing with different types of files and had similar problems.

Oh yeah and another thing, when I try to erase the files from the pen drive I get an error message saying that they cannot be erased. This is driving me insane!!

WHAT IS GOING ON HERE????????

You might find that opening the "My Computer" folder will fix the problem. You'll probably see a pictire of a little USB stick with nnGB external device where nn is the nr of GB found on the USB device..

Just double click on the image. You shouldn't need to mount it or whatever.

Remember also that the way USB mount is handled in SUSE 10.2 has changed as well.

If you don't have the My Computer icon on your desktop simply type

sysinfo:/ in a browser.

Cheers

When I have had problems with some of the data on usb pen drives there was corrupt data somewhere on the drive. I have had to backup what I could, reformat the drive, then copy back good data.

My pen drive works fine but I notice I had some trouble getting it to recognise the camera card.
Had to plug in and out quite a few times to get it to go . Even a woman would have .....well better not

I've had trouble with USB sticks and SD Cards as well with Opensuse 10.2. What happened to me was that I would plug in my USB Stick and it would show up and all. Copy files to it. Remove it. Stick it back in. No files found!

The problem is that they are mounted asynch by default which means the files are written to memory and held there until you "safely remove" the removable media. That didn't seem to work for me very well either so what I ended up doing was using an fstab entry for the devices with the "synch" switch. That way, data is written on-the-fly directly to the device rather than memory.

I found an article a while back explaining the procedure but can't find it now. Sorry.
