Thanks for the suggestions. It appears that this process is more complex than I thought. Here is what I really would love to happen: I want to reconfigure the xserver so that I can get GUI back, configure with generic diaply that uses VESA driver on a relatively poor resolutions say 1024x768. as a result overwrite the xorg.conf file that SUSE automatically created for me with one that I will create with vesa as my diplay driver.
Once I am in the gui environment I can do all that and then install the ATI drivers, and reconfiugre the xserver again this time to refelect the fglrx.
<aside: I am quite frustrated right now and forgive me is I am touching any ones nerves here>
Why is this so difficult in SUSE (or any othe rpm based distro). Debian distro's are so much more intuitive and reliable (a simple command dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg gets you to do it reset the diplay and login to GUI), how easy, and how less frustrating to the user (newbie I might add). Practically, my machine is useless with SUSE right now. This is not an issue with beta version of 10.1, but also happened to me in 10.0 (al all the other rpm based distros like mandrake pclos etc). I have succesfully installed the ATI drivers in dapper (that uses v7 of xorg) so that can't be used in defense of SUSE 10.1 beta8 (it is using version 6.9.0 of X). Take a look at these simple instructions: http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubu...allation_Guide , and can u show me one like this is SUSE???)
Okay, now back to my problem...
Thanks,
Smiley

Hi smiley_lauf, I'm sorry that you feel frustrated, I'll try to give you more specific suggestions:
1. As you suggested, the priority is that you get back in KDE, you can use the "vesa" driver for this. You have to edit the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Use the text editor that you prefer. Do this as root and before starting make a backup of the current file:
Code:
cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup
Now start to edit the file, first find the Monitor Section, check if the specifications are correct (Display Size, Horizontal and Vertical Frequencies):
Login as a normal user and then startx, hopefully you'll be now in KDE. If you still have problems with X, post the errors in the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log. I'm sorry not being more specific, in case that X doesn't start we need to know the errors, the lines that start with (EE). So instead of posting the whole file, post the result of the following command:
Quote:
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep "(EE)"
Once you solve this, you can proceed to install the ATI drivers.
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
But many warnings (WW):

Note sure if this helps?
I suspect that the xorg.conf file has many options under display, screen sections that may be screwing things up??? I am open to more suggestions,
Thnaks,
Smiley
Hi Smiley, what is happening is that most of the options are selected automatically by sax2 depending on the driver (radeon). In this case, the vesa driver does not need these options. Also the Modes are also generated by sax2, at this point they are not necessary. Finally you have two mice detected in your xorg.conf file, I don't know which one you are using, I made the assumption that you are using the first one.
Then, I suggest you to comment the following lines in your xorg.conf file:

Sorry Victor, does not work. How about the 'monitor' section?? should we not edit that too?
Further up the log:

I guess we are getting there, right? thanks again.

to support victor, which in fact did a very good job:
1) the second mouse should be your touchpad, isn't it? synaptics sounds like that. I have the same on my laptop. So, you should uncomment it, but this you can do also later...
2) if you download a new driver, I suppose the 8.23.7, which is the latest, you will have to run aticonfig. fglrxconfig does not anymore exist. For running aticonfig the first time I used:
this worked fine.
3) after running aticonfig you have to check your xorg.conf. sometimes, this happened to me, it forgets the fglrx driver and puts in again "radeon" and 3D does not work anymore, but this you can change manually if that happens.
seelenbild28, thanks, this is very helpful, but I am stuck in the black screen. How can I download ati-driver-installer-8.23.7-i386.run when I can't even see anything. Just a black screen. cntrl alt f1 brings me to command line text mode thats all. If you could get me into the GUI mode I am sure I can take it from there.
yes, I understood the problem with your screen. victorh already gave you the hint with the BUS ID. I don't know what could be the problem.
I have only two more ideas:
1) Did you restart the X-Server after changing the xorg.conf? You can do this by pressing "strg-alt-backspace".
2) Did you try to start sax in the text mode?
Ubuntu xorg.conf (with ATI fully configured and working well)
Code:
# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man /etc/X11/xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Do you think I could just use this file? (i guess not as I do not have the fglrx drivers installed- how stupid of me...anyway )
let me know how else to proceed.
<aside> I have posted the same problem on OpenSUSE forums about 2 days ago, there are about 30 hits on the thread, but no response as yet..hey guess I will have to work this out on my own...but would appreciate your help as I go along...
EDIT: How about going for the radical reinstallation, then at the "summary of hardware configuration" screen, can I not set the screen, monitor and resoultion to generic diplay, vesa, and 1024x768 and let sax2 regenerate the xorg.conf file???? Just a thought?
Thanks again.

I tried all combinations: radeon-->vesa, commenting out the modeline chnaging the resolutions so that they start with 1024x768; but nothing happens, the system just hangs in a black screen. ctrl alt f1 brings it to text mode.
#sax2
also hangs (after stating that access to diplay is denied), and I was root.
Why is there no support on SUSE official website for this? OpenSUSE forums IMO is a dead-meat! there does not seem to be any action there. Do you have any other suggestions?
