Suse 10.1 Wireless finally working on my toshiba Laptop Satellite M30-S731

Hi guys,

Good news from me, now Suse 10.1 works very well on my Toshiba Laptop Satellite M30 S-731. My first distro is Mandriva 2006. I just changed to Suse just for fun and try. I want to tell all my adventures of my first try for Suse and how I get my wireless works.

1. The first problem on my first try on Suse is the installation..(what a bad experience..on install got problem..?? oh my God..). I remember when in installation progress, there is an check box option to include Suse Add-on CD. I thought, we can just install whatever programs in Suse Add-on we like after finished installs the Suse 10.1, so I just skipped it. But this is why I got the problem. If I skip to check the "include Suse Add-on CD" check box, when Suse copying and installing application, and ask to insert 10.1 Add-on, I just input my Suse Add-on CD, but Suse says "Doesn't contain the required media". This is strange...I am pretty sure I didnt put the wrong cd, or wrong label on my CD. The second time, I also skipped to check the "include Suse Add-on CD", but this second time, different error occured. There was message box, said "Package not found", and there was 3 buttons we can click; Abort, Retry, Ignore. I have tried these 3 buttons, no effect, nothing happened and just came out that message box again after clicked whichever those 3 buttons.....stupid...

The solution: Select and Check "Include Suse Add-on CD", Suse will ask where this Add-on source media form. I just choose CD-ROM, and Suse asked to insert Suse 10.1 Add-on CD to add this media for the installation. After this step, actually I got problem again, because Suse can not format my hard drive with Add-on CD. It is said, can not format, installation erorr...bla bla bla... HMMM..?? So....You have to change your CD-ROM back to Suse 10.1 CD1 again on your OWN...this is also stupid...come more stupid when I can not open my CD-ROM after I inserted Suse 10.1 Add-on CD and include it on the installation. Luckily my laptop's CD-ROM can be opened manually... :) And yeah, now it is all well done...all works NOW !! installation was very successfull..

2. When I try to login to Suse with my previous user in Mandriva 2006, the screen come out black screen, and then the screen got me back to the login screen again. I have tried many times and was the same result. My first solution is, I just open tty1 with Ctrl + Alt + F1 then add new user and login with that user. It logged in successfully. My second solution, I deleted any folder and files generated from Mandriva 2006 on previous user's home directory of Mandriva 2006. So my gueesed is, there is some folders or files generated by Mandriva 2006 that can not be applied to Suse 10.1. I just deleted them, then try to log in again with that previous Mandriva user, and SUCCESS!!

3. My first try with Suse, is very very wonderfull, it did detect my graphic card (nice GUI, configured properly), sound, keyboard, fnfx (toshiba's Fn key)...almost everyting, but not for the wireless....I researched anywhere in Linuxquestions.org, suseforums.net, forums.suselinuxsupport.de. It made me really confusing, there are so many ways to do with wireless. We can use ndiswrapper, ipw2200 firmware, and in Suse we can use KNetworkManager, or traditional using ifup, we can use script, bla bla bla.... :( :( :( this is stupid and this is why I re-installed my Suse just because I feel that I messed up with the original firmware and modprobe and important files.... without any backups (This is also, stupid me.. :) )...That was because still struggling to get my wireless works...The worst part is, No one answer me in LinuxQuestions.org........... :( :( :(

After try this and try that from my research, the solution is really simple but strange....I found someone that can get his wireless works just to change the WEP passphrase to Hexadeximal input type (40/140 hex). Oh my God and what the hell...So that is the solution??? So simple......The wireless actually already worked, but can not connect to the access point which has a WEP encryption...But the solution just change the key input type to hexadecimal...that's IT !!

Now...I use my laptop with Suse 10.1 wirelessly connect to the Internet to send this thread.. :)
But this is the first time, I still want play around another stuffs in Suse....Wish me luck...hahaha..

If there is any problems with my Suse 10.1, Please help ME.... :)

Cheers,

Tje
