SuSE 10.1 KDE freeze
Hi everyone!
I have recently installed SuSE Linux 10.1 on my desktop (I already have it on my laptop and I am quite satisfied with it until now). I wanted to update some packages via YaST when YaST refused to respond. I wanted to abort but it just didn't. So, I used the Ctrl+Alt+Esc kill switch. It then worked fine until I rebooted. Now, it takes ages to get into KDE and when it finally gets there I cannot use my keyboard nor my mouse. I have tried plugging different keyboards (USB and PS/2), other mice but none works.
Does anyone know what to do? (Except re-installing)
What packages were you updating when you killed YaST? If it was the kernel, try to reinstall it, assuming that console keyboard is functional and you know how to use the console.

At the time I killed it, I wasn't uploading anything. I just took ages to load the information from the repositories and I did not want to wait... There was a window with a clock ticking indicating that I should be patient.
If the keyboard would work, that would be possible. If...

Yes it works in BIOS and in GRUB. That's why I am now posting these messages from my dual-boot Win thingy... It works fine in Windows (which in itself sounds paradoxical) and prior to starting up SuSE/KDE. So, somewhere in that process is something that goes wrong. Normally, it takes a while before I can press ESC and see the messages from starting linux because I have a Logitech Multimedia keyboard, which is only loaded after a while. But now nothing goes from the moment linux is starting up... I only see the splash screen, then after 5 minutes or so, I get KDE but without my mouse and keys working.
P.S.: I have a /home partition and a separate / partitition. If I install linux anew, can I still keep my home partition and settings or is my "old" home partition then just some additional home folder?
You can choose to preserve the home partition when reinstalling opensuse and everything should be fine. Were you by any chance using zen? Unless you can do some boot sequence debugging with a live CD, reinstallation or maybe system repair from the suse installation CD seem to be the only available options.

Well, well, I'm back in linux. I tried to "update" the partition containing / but after rebooting the installation DVD got stuck at "performing installation". However, miraculously tonight it passed (although with an error message) the installation and now I'm back. The system is the same, all connections the same. As if the DVD "updated" to the same version...
