SuSE 10.1 Installation

Greetings,

I got 3 HDDS, one 160GB SATA and two 80GB ATA.

My winblows installation resides in the primary master 80 GB ATA, the 160GB SATA is for windows backup ( movies, games, programs ) and the other 80GB is for my linux installation, which is secondary master.

Now the installation of SuSE is going well, everything seems fine, until i reboot, i get GRUB error 22.

The weird is that when i have the SuSE Installation CD in the tray and choose Boot from the HDD, the menu appears and i can boot to either winblows or linux.

What is wrong and how i can fix it ?

~Andy

What is the boot order in your BIOS ?

What are the contents of /boot/grub/menu.lst ?

SuSE 10.1

Hi,

The order within the bios is correct, primary master first then secondary master.

I tried to switch that but i get disk boot failure.

As for /boot/grub/menu.lst follows

# Modified by YaST2. Last modification on Fri Oct 13 21:16:34 UTC 2006

color white/blue black/light-gray
default 0
timeout 8
gfxmenu (hd1,1)/boot/message

I have never come across GRUB error 22. I am trying to get an idea of what you prbably might have done. I am not able to get a cleaar picture as you are not providing much info on your setup.

I presume you are on a desktop, with an 80GB ATA with Windoz as Primary Master and another 80GB ATA with linux as Secondary Master and a 160GB SATA as a backup disk. I don'tknow where you installed GRUB ! Did you install it to the primary master or secondary master ? Clear this bit and probably you can try sort this out.

SuSE 10.1 Installation

Hi,

Well, i cannot tell for sure, since YaST installed it, how can i tell where it's installed ?

What should i try to fix this error 22 ? It's really annoying booting with a CD.

When i was resizing my primary master i haven't had such issues...

Actually once it worked okay w/ my SATA, but not anymore, whenever i'm installing to anything except the primary master i get error 22.

Try disabling the other disks but linux and booting from it. You might wanna make it the primary master as GRUB has the flexibility to make windoze boot from secondary master/slave.

Just for those reading this thread who don't know what error 22 is:

22 : "Must load Multiboot kernel before modules"

This error is returned if the module load command is used before loading a Multiboot kernel. It only makes sense in this case anyway, as GRUB has no idea how to communicate the presence of location of such modules to a non-Multiboot-aware kernel.

You can find a list of Grub errors here: http://www.uruk.org/orig-grub/errors.html#stage1_5
