Suse 10.1 alpha 2
 

I was happily getting along with 9.3 pro when I noticed 10.1 alpha 2 was out with the new KDE . So I get the 5 cd set and try and install it. First as an upgrade. then as a new install. It hangs after install. when I try and log in and then start kde or gnome I get a string of erros. Most notibly that the Display isn't set and can't be found

What can I do to fix this?? thanx.

Use Suse 10.0 and not 10.1 alpha. 10.1 is still in an early development stage and is not recommended for production systems.

This is the breakdown of what I recieve:

xset unable to open display
xset unable to open display
xsetroot unable to open display
Kdeinit: aborting
ksmserver cannot connect to X
ERROR: couldn't connect to DCOP server
can't connect kdeinit!
starting artsd!
then I get the shutdown scripts....


I've tried export DISPLAY=127.0.0.1:0 and 1 at the end
I've tried to put in the above with or without "
I've tried set instead of export

I also tried xhost +localhost
that didn't work either. I'm about out of ideas anyone else???

can anyone help me with this? I think this is a fairly straightforward question. thanks.

I advise you to clean install suse 10.0, nothing is special with alpha2.
At least, wait until RC1 or RC2.

Can you tell me if there is much of anything special in 10? I have 9.3 pro and it works good. before I formatted I had it set with superkaramba,Kat,apt4rpm,synaptec and a few other things like all the media codecs.

No, but you can check the release notes, see if any of the big features or changes apply to you. We can't tell you whether or not you want any of the changes. It is up to you. I would, but I always stay up to date, I would be more up to date if I knew how to compil emy own Kernel, but I don't yet.
You could always upgrade, and keep all the installs you have now, but just get the packages upgraded. Check Suse.com for the release notes, maybe you do want to, maybe you don't care. My guess is, if you have to ask, you don't care, and thus don't need to upgrade.

i am a new user of suse,
i once installed suse 9.3, but soon after that i get the 10.0, i am not sure their difference, but i think 9.3 is really more professional, just go online update patches it will be up-to-date.
