LinuxQuestions.org - SUSE 10.0 RC1 Preliminary tests -- so far so good

Here's my main tests with RC1

1) saved partition image of my 10.4 Beta (working) system "just in case". (Used Stand Alone ACRONIS TRUE IMAGE but PARTIMAGE etc would work).

2) saved some Configuration files Wireless wlan0, Swat (SAMBA) and some data from HOME.

3) went for a CLEAN (Brand new install) -- worked fine

Hardware used

Ran on a Sony VAIO Laptop -- SIS intel set with internal 80 GB hard disk, external Windoze (NTFS) USB 250 GB maxtor disk, sound card built in AC 97 (sound module probed was snd-intel 8x0) and Nviida Geforce FX Go 5600 running at 24 bit 1400 X 1050 (SXGA+)

Belkin Optical Wireless USB mouse model F8E825 (hate Laptop touchpad mice)

Inbuilt LAN card (not connected to the LAN ) Linksys WPC54g network wireless card (wanted to test wireless -- I know normal LAN works 9999 times out of 10,000 so I wanted to get wireless up.

Printer Epson 1290 attached to a Windoze box.

Untested hardware --built in Modem of some indeterminate make --- Couldn't care less about this as I NEVER EVER bother with slow modems now --as I have a Vodafone Data card (Mobile Connect) which is at least 5 times faster than a 56K modem I can always boot into 'Doze (Ugh!!) when I can't get on to a Wireless Lan.

Extra packages selected from the default (KDE I'm using)

Ndiswrapper.

Packages deselected from the standard

XINE, KAFFEINE.

Result

Install -- no probs ===> But Don't do INTERNET check / online update --this is still broken (list of update servers --there probably aren't any yet for YOU for release 10)

Boot -- fine

Wireless optical mouse worked WITH SCROLL WHEEL

WirelessNetwork card worked 1st go after configuring NDISWRAPPER

Samba Windows shares worked -- both accessing Windows from Linux and accessing Linux from Windows.

Note in case the network browsing icon is missing just type in Konqueror (KDE) the following address smb://windowsboxname/ and you should see all your shares
or if you want to see the entire network for a domain e.g WORKGROUP type smb://domainname/ for example smb://workgroup/.

Printing on the Windows box from Linux --worked fine

DVD PLA|YING --finally worked (use Pacman site)

Menus from KDE -- only the perennial problem of a large gap between entries on when logged in as a user -- easily fixed by going into the HIDDEN files --usually start with a .

Look for .kde===>share===>config and select file kickerrc

in the section [Menus] just remove menu height.

Still to test --- scanning but I don't do this very often anyway.

Still "Broken" or not fixed properly.

Accessing a USB external drive with Windows files (NTFS) as a USER. You still have to umount /dev/sdb1 and remount via mount -a as root before a user will see any directories on the drive. I

Not tested -- Acccessing external Linux USB drive as a user

Problem from Beta 4 fixed -- sometimes when leaving X you can't get any command again on the Native console until you press CTRL-Z. Then some jumble appears and you finally see the command line --this has now been mended --you can exit KDE cleanly now.

The other niggle --the new hardware found problem has been fixed.

Looking very good --I'm going to run with this over the next week and will post if I see any niggles appearing.

Tips for SAMBA use SWAT (start the service and then enter localhost:901 to logon (root password needed) makes configuring easier.

Even neater tip from Konqueror use ALT-F2 keys and when the little box appears type
kcmshell 'fileshare'. You'll need to get into the ADMINISTRATOR mode (expand the box to full screen) and then you've got a REAL easy way of configuring your shares both TO and FROM windows)

OK I think that's a good Sunday Mornings work --now I can go and enjoy the Sunday Papers.
