Suse 10.0 RC1

Was thinking about downloading Suse 10.0 RC1, how much do you think it will change between now and the release on the 6th?

not much (i hope).. I downloaded and installed day before yesterday and have yet had time to really look at it... I did notice KDE 3.4 and Gnome 2.12 and OO 1.9<something or other> beta and really impressed with the install and available pkgs...

With all that said, I do kinda wish I hadn't wasted 5 CD's on a RC1 just days before the actual release.. :-( << silly me >> Oh well... I'll just update as needed... DSL makes that process much less painfull on the download of multi-megabyte updates..

I have just downloaded SUSE 10.1alpha. I am going to upgrade my SUSE 10.0 RC1 right now. RC1 has been working perfectly and I had no problems with it. All packages were working 100% and I hope that alpha will be as good as that one and that there will be no major changes before the final one.

Only use the alphas for testing because as the development process continues, they are likley to break a lot of things so they are no good for production systems.

Can't see there will be any changes, but would like some with respect to configuration and wireless though, but a dvd iso is a must have as the 5 discs are a pain try installing the kernel source for example, time, time and fed up of that little clock.

I am running the 10rc1 on a 64 bit machine and al last apache works with php for the first time on 64 bit machines, alas the wireless cards do not.

I am also running 10rc1 on my 32 bit laptop and am limited to only a very few wireless cards working on it having falling back
to my three year old orinoco cs pcmcia card. Very limited wireless drivers built in compared to Mandrivel 10.2.

Otherwise, it does seem very much slower than my former os Mandrake 10.1 on this laptop.

However, all things considered and learning the everything off philophosy of SuSE, which means it is really hard work getting everything up and running it is the best yet. Seems to be stable to and yast network seems to be a lot easier than I remember on Suse 9.1.

I think it is the best yet, though since mandrivel is fetching it's 2006 out now and if I can have 64bit apache php working on that I may switch again due to the limitations of SuSE on wireless drivers.

Everything works on 10rc1 eventually, and is well worth the move from 9.1 and not having to download Thunderbird and Firefox is a big bonus. Openoffice looks even better too.

I hope people have noticed that the new alpha is for the 10.1 release, not for the 10.
I donīt what will happen if you update 10rc1 to 10.1alpha and try to update(downgrade)to 10final. So keep this on mind...

SUSE10 -> beta1->beta2->beta3->beta4->rc1->final (6th of october)

SUSE10.1 -> alpha1 -> ...beta...-> final (february 2006)

Thats what I was trying to emphasise in my posts. As more developemnt continues on the alphas, there are more chances of things breaking.

TigerLInux-I've been reading your posts here and on the Mandriva forum. I don't think you should try SUSE 10.0 RC since the FINAL SUSE 10.0 is coming out on Oct. 6th. Just wait a few more days. There probably won't be too many changes with the final release, but just in case ...

And yes, SUSE is just as easy to use as Mandriva. I love them both!

Well it looks like I know what I'm going to be doing for the next day or so. I'm guessing that if I was going to install the RC1 and after I can do an update via YaST and get all the packages that changed from RC1 to the Final release right. I hope that maybe they have fixed that problem with the Atheros chips locking up when you do an network restart. I've had this problems since I moved from 9.1 to 9.2 and 9.3. Other than that I have not had any problems but I just like to play with the new stuff I guess.

Sorry there are no drivers in the 10rc1 for the atheros chipset. How did you get it to work in the last SuSE?

There is no support in the 64 bit version for any wireless -the drivers are 32 bit only- unless you pay Linuxant there $20 dollars for there alleged only 64 bit wireless driver..

Both the 32 and 64 bit versions of 10rc1 come with only a few of the oldest wireless drivers and on my laptop 32bit I got only the Orinioco pcmcia card to work out of 5 modern wireless cards and usb's.
