Stripped down Suse 10
 

I want to install Suse 10 on our corporate network desktops but want to install only main programs such as:

OpenOffice.org
Firefox (used to access our management system)
Gaim
Evolution

And few other such as CD burner software and such

How do I do that? When I do the initial installation, the system installs ALL OF THE applications that I do not need and once I start deselecting the programs, the issue of dependencies arise.

How to overcome this?

Please someone help me.

Also, do you think installing Suse 10 as server on a LAN for file sharing, database access and printer and firewall is a good idea?

I want Suse only because we want to save on Novell Licensing and once we are able to afford it, the migration from Suse to Novell should be easy.

you can select what you want to install during OS setup. You can also try OSS Super-Slick (stripped down OpenSuSE)

Thanks. I know I can select what I want. The only problem is I do not know which ones should I keep as there are so many items. I'll check the Super version of Suse/Gnome once it become available (it shows as not available at this time).

How about the question if Suse 10 will work well as a server?

Each package has a description of what it does, read that and decide whether it worth installing or not.

You can always choose to install a minimum system first during SUSE installation then run YaST to add packages only what you need.

SUSE SUPER is a fine and fast 1-CD setup, but I would rather wait for it to mature a little bit.
