Question Speedtouch modem (aaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrgggggghhhhhhhh!!)

I am trying to get a speedtouch 330 (silver) modem to work in SuSE. I have tried just about every tutorial on linux quetions and none of them have worked.

The last one I tried was for speedmgmt, im not sure if it installed properly, the make command didnt output anything that I could understand but there were no errors. When I tried to connect in SuSE I got the following messages in the KInternet log file:

SuSE Meta pppd (smpppd-ifcfg), Version 1.16 on the-beast.
Status is: disconnected
trying to connect to smpppd
connect to smpppd
Status is: disconnected
Status is: connecting
pppd[0]: Plugin pppoatm.so loaded.
pppd[0]: Plugin passwordfd.so loaded.
pppd[0]: connect(0.38): Resource temporarily unavailable
pppd[0]: Failed to open 0.38: Resource temporarily unavailable
Status is: disconnected
pppd[0] died: Serial port open failed (exit code 7)

Is there any way to install my modem that is guaranteed to work on SuSE, and is easy (an RPM file would be great), or am I stuck with having to switch to windows every time i want to download something.

Could you let me know which model you bought?

I've been trying to get my speedtouch usb modem set up but I'm just banging my head against a brick wall.

I think the only way forward is to get another modem which I can be confident will work.

I'm running suse 9.2 professional if that makes any difference.

Many thanks,

Mark

Hi, I have been having major snags with the SuSe 10(64Bit(DVD EVAL)) release. I will list what I have done, I am also sorry if my writing is simplistic or ABC'ish But I find this is the best way I learn and have of explaing what is happening.

From the Desktop logged in as me not ROOT, I opened Konsole
and Typed SU ROOT then enter my P/W from here I changed my directory to desktop using cd Desktop then use the command "tar zxvf speedtouch-1.3.tar.gz" which unpacks the files to my desktop
next I change my directory to speedtouch-1.3 by typing cd speedtouch-1.3. From the instructions that I have the next command is "./configure". The computer does its thing for a minute or so and comes back with promt. So I type in the next command from the instructions I have. "make" and here is where it goes Horriably worng for me

The computer returns this:
"inux:/home/d247257r/Desktop/speedtouch-1.3 # make
cd src && make
make[1]: Entering directory `/home/d247257r/Desktop/speedtouch-1.3/src'
gcc -Wall -I. -I/usr/local/include -I/usr/include -O2 -DUSE_SYSLOG -DVERSION=\"1

make: *** [modem] Error 2

This means noting to me other that something has gone wrong or I have not done what was asked, but what any help would appriciated or even just a quick pointer to put me back on track.

Yours hopefully

Robin

I finally managed it late last night using this site:
steve-parker.org/speedtouchconf.
Anyone wantng to get a speedtouch usb modem on line should look here first! This site contains all you could need, though I have the Blue/Purple speedtouch 330 Model so you may need to use the firmware that he suggests for the silver modem. which is called Rev4fw.zip

http://www.linux-usb.org/SpeedTouch/
is probably the best site for Speedtouch HOWTOs. It covers several distros. I managed to get my silver modem working in both Fedora and Ubuntu with the instructions here, but I haven't tried the SuSE instructions because now I use a modem/router. Much easier.
