Sound... sorta plays in OpenSuSE 10.2

Installed 10.2 from dvd, got xine working with mp3 support, got my wireless PCI card working, got my soundcard working.... or so I thought. The sound routinely cuts out, every few seconds, for like half a second. happens with mp3's in Xine, happens with flash video, happens with java games, happens with mpeg and wmv video.

82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller

Is what my hardware says, and Im sure its right, its an intell High Definition Audio Controller (on board) from my memory of the motherboard box

Unfortunately, this doesn't give me enough to go on. Could you run this script and post the output?

More than likely, you will just need to install a newer version of the sound drivers. The data this script generages will help me to verify that. Worst case, we need to add driver support for your system.

You will need to upgrade your alsa packages. There were some issues with the version of alsa you are running.

If you would like to keep your Suse distribution semi-clean, I have a build environment that you can download to build rpm packages for your distribution.

Let me know if you run into problems with this.

I updated to the newest library and driver, and this helped, a bit. It now will only skip every ten seconds or so. Something to note here, the audio cuts out, but the file, mp3 or mpg or flash, continues playing. and audio picks back up where it should be.the little visualizer type thing (equalizer bars bouncing) in amarok even continues as it should.

By "newest version" do you mean 1.0.14rc4 development or 1.0.13 stable? If it is 1.0.13 stable, then please upgrade to 1.0.14rc4. There are massive changes going into alsa right now, and fixing an old version is not an option.

Please rerun the alsa-info.sh script to verify that everything is the latest.

Try rerunning alsaconf. Sometimes that's enough to shake the system into working properly.

The only other thing I can think of is you possibly have a bad motherboard. I tested the driver out on a similar system here (D945GTP, you have the D945GNT according to my records), and it works ok. The boards are virtually identical, and have the same audio configuration.

its gotten much better after kicking alsaconf into action again, not perfect still, but now it only dies when the systems under load (more then 2 tqabs in firefox open for example, not much load for a 2-proc system, but still).

I know this isnt a hardware issue, the card worked alright when I had to run the box under XP. It ran very, very noisy (buzzing constantly, when no sound files were playing, and when they were). I've noticed they dont buzz under ALSA. Could this be related, something trying to kill the background noise and inadvertantly getting what i wanted to hear too? If so, could I just disable that?

never mind all of this. I just realized when it was working on redmond's crap i was always plugged into the front jack, not the back jack. Having plugged the speakers into the front jack, it's been solved, no cutting out at all, and it sounds better, less noisy then it did on XP. Sorry for wasting everyones time.

No problem. Actually, I remember fixing an issue on that system back in alsa 1.0.11. Front panel wouldn't work then. It was the first thing I did in alsa.
