Hi. I just put OpenSUSE 10.0 on my Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600 laptop. Installation went well, but I am having sound problems. YaST says the sound is:
82801BA/BAM AC'97 Audio
Configured as sound card number 0
Driver snd-intel8x0
When the computer starts, I get a pretty welcome sound. However, when I try to run audio applications I get a warning message:
Direct Access to the Sound Device Not Possible
No sound card available or sound support is not configured yet. However, the application uses or requires sound support.
According the Toshiba, the sound card is:
# manufacturer : Yamaha
# supported audio format : 16-bit stereo
# supported sound standards : Windows Sound System 2.0 compatible
# speakers : built-in stereo speakers
# type : YMF743
# maximum sampling rate : 48 kHz
# ports : external microphone port, headphone jack (stereo), volume control dial
# full duplex support : yes
# direct sound : yes
# direct 3D sound : yes
YaST has Yamaha YMF744, but no YMF743.
If I try to add YMF744, I get an error:
An error occured in the installation of YMF744. The kernel module snd-ymfpci for sound support could not be loaded. This can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
From the command line, issue the command: hwinfo --sound (if you have the hwinfo utility installed). That should tell you which module is required, whether or not it is active, and the modprobe command needed to load the module.
# hwinfo --sound

Driver Activation Cmd: "modprobe i810_audio"
Driver Info #1:
Driver Status: snd_intel8x0 is active
Driver Activation Cmd: "modprobe snd_intel8x0"
Config Status: cfg=yes, avail=yes, need=no, active=unknown
So I issue
Quote:
modprobe i810_audio
and it reads
Quote:
...
Driver Status: i810_audio is active
...
This seems promising, but when I try to open an audio application, I am still getting
Quote:
Direct Access to the Sound Device Not Possible

Did you try the Kde Control Center -> Sound & Multimedia to see if the sound system is enabled and using the correct sound architecture (i.e., alsa, oss, or whatever)?
"Enable the Sound System" was checked in KDE Control Center. Under the Sound System Hardware tab, "Select the audio device:" had been set to Autodetect. If I try the "Open Sound System", or "Threaded Open Sound System", then hit Apply, a window titled Restarting the sound system comes up with a status bar that repetatively goes from 0% to 100%. If I try Advanced Linux Sound Architecture, it goes from 0% to 100% and closes.
If I try Test Sound button under the General tab, I get the KDE crash window, "The application Soundserver (artsd) crashed and caused the signal 11 (SIGSEGV)."
If I try opening a .mp3 in, say, amaroK or Kaffeine, no sound can be heard and the application runs through the file in about 5 seconds even though the files has over an hour of content. I don't know if this is related.
