Ditto on more information. Did you set fstab yourself? With SuSE just let the install handle that. It always works, even with two drives without any manual intervention. Command line is both my friend and my enemy. Swap the media to see if that makes a difference and of course tell us if you are reading or writing and if you wrote the media, from what.

I am using Suse 9.1 Pro. The fstab and mtab are configured by Yast automatically.
My dmesg shows this:-
hdc: SONY DVD RW DW-Q28A, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
hdc: ATAPI 48X DVD-ROM DVD-R CD-R/RW drive, 2048kB Cache
Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.20
And then it shows:-
/dev/dvdrecorder /media/dvdrecorder subfs fs=cdfss,ro,procuid,nosuid,nodev,exec,iocharset=utf8 0 0 :failed

9.1 is 4 releases back so my memory is a little shaky on it. With 9.1 CD/DVD defaulted to DMA off and it needs to be turned on. Note some 10.1 dmesg and fstab output below. Check out opensuse.org for the latest iso's for download.

fragos@Geo:~> dmesg |grep hdc
ide1: BM-DMA at 0xa808-0xa80f, BIOS settings: hdcio, hddio
hdc: LITE-ON DVDRW SHW-160P6S, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
hdc: ATAPI 48X DVD-ROM DVD-R CD-R/RW drive, 2048kB Cache, UDMA(66)
fragos@Geo:~> dmesg |grep hdd
ide1: BM-DMA at 0xa808-0xa80f, BIOS settings: hdcio, hddio
hdd: LITE-ON DVD SHD-16P1S, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
hdd: ATAPI 48X DVD-ROM drive, 1725kB Cache, UDMA(33)

Geo:/etc # cat fstab
/dev/hda3 / reiserfs acl,user_xattr 1 1
/dev/hda2 /Sys1 reiserfs defaults 1 2
/dev/hda1 swap swap defaults 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
sysfs /sys sysfs noauto 0 0
debugfs /sys/kernel/debug debugfs noauto 0 0
usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs noauto 0 0
devpts /dev/pts devpts mode=0620,gid=5 0 0
