Some inital problems with SuSE - booting and flle installation

Hi Everyone (specially Mr. Bouncer) ! I am absolutely pleased that I have successfully installed SuSE 10.1 to my external HDD with all my data (windows based) intact.

Now I have 2 small problems:

1... I wish to know what I should do so that GRUB loads at bootup time. It is installed on a partition on my external HDD. I found a site which said that I need to edit the "initrd" thing by booting from the installation disk into "rescue" mode. I did so. However, when it asks for the rescue login and password, and I give the appropriate username and password (its the same that I use to login to Linux); it does not accept it and it reasks for my username and password. Is there any way I can edit anything so as to boot into Linux at bootup (i.e. have the external HDD detected).

2... How do I install a programmme? Its .rpm and a .bz something extension kind.

I know my questions might be stupid but help from any and every one who can help me with these problems would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Small problems that require looong explanations

For #1, have a look here: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=426099

#2: If it's a SUSE rpm, use the package manager of YaST, if it's 3rd party, try to avoid the installation, it could ruin your system (or simply not run).
The .bz may contain sources, so you'd need to compile the software first. To get more help, please have a look at LQ Wiki and Tutorials, and/or specify the software you'd like to install.
