SMTP segfault on SUSE 9.1 AMD64

Hello there.

Early this month, I put in a new server with 200 email users. I used Suse 9.1 on AMD64 using 64-bit version of SUSE9.1. It's running Postfix & mailman listserv.

I just happened to look into /var/log/messages and I see MANY lines of the below:

Jan 16 01:27:54 bulldogs kernel: smtp[7343]: segfault at 0000000000000000 rip 000000000042d14a rsp 0000007fbffff560 error 4
Jan 16 01:44:33 bulldogs kernel: local[7388]: segfault at 0000000000001000 rip 0000000000428f2a rsp 0000007fbffff380 error 4
Jan 16 06:20:05 bulldogs kernel: qmgr[7898]: segfault at 0000000000000000 rip 000000000042351a rsp 0000007fbffff260 error 4

smtp segfault is BY FAR the most numerous one. It happens every few minutes. The local and qmgr ones happen very seldom.

Traveling around the newsgroups seem to indicate this is a postfix issue. One person told me the solution is to upgrade to Suse9.2 OR downgrade to postfix 32 bit version.

I don't really want to upgrade to 9.2 just yet. I'm also not sure how to go about installing a 32 bit version of postfix. I assume I won't be using YAST, but rather download a 32 bit version of postfix and compile it myself?

The funny thing is, it appears that all my users email is working just fine, no one has complained yet. Still, this is not a good sign, and things may go south quickly if I don't do something about this.

Any other ideas, suggestions, or guidance?

Thanks a million

Tim

Re: SMTP segfault on SUSE 9.1 AMD64

My only suggestion would be to verify the memory in your host is not going south.

I'd hope not, linuxdawg

Suse released this YOU update over the weekend.. perhaps this addresses my issue with postfix and SMTP:

postfix - A fast, secure, and flexible mailer

This update fixes the following bugs in postfix: These two bugs are caused by the IPv6 patch. They do NOT exist in plain postfix! - When running postfix chrooted (which is NOT the default) and using SuSEconfig to maintain the chroot jail or when not mounting /proc into the jail and "permit_mx_backup" is set into "smtpd_recipient_restrictions", postfix allows to relay mail to every destination that has a MX with AAAA-Records in DNS set (IPv6). - When setting "debug_peer_list" to a non-empty value and using lmtp delivery via unix domain sockets, the postfix lmtp process will segfault. This bug is only valid on 64bit platforms: - postfix components can segfault because of non-portable reuse of variadic argument lists.

...However, I do not run ipv6... Hmm..

Just wanted to follow up and mention that applying the SuSE's newest postfix update via YOU seemed to fix the problem. I haven't seen a segfault for over a hour now. Previously, there would be a handful of SMTP segfaults every few minutes.

Cool.
