Smart update error

Smart tells me there are "pending upgrades". But after it downloads all the upgrades it errors out with...

"warning: Configuration is in readonly mode!
error: Can't update channels in readonly mode."

What exactly does that mean? I am running as root and the files under /etc/smart permit writing by root.

Thanks.

You normally get that message when the database is locked or another instance of smart is already accessing the database.
