smart error importing gpg keys

I keep getting errors when I try to use smart to upgrade my wifes laptop. I've set the keyserver=pgp.mit.edu but it still fails to import the key then just quits without upgrading anything ... the error says to be sure gpg is installed (it is) and that the keyserver pgp.mit.edu is working <-- that I don't know about but after 3 days I would think the server would not be down that long ... anyone have any ideas ??

thanks ... I talked to Pascal that night and got this setup but I still had errors with some keys so I just disabled it for now...
