SLES 10 SP2 unable to create a new user from YAST

Hello all,

I am running SLES10 SP2 under z/vm in z9 mainframe box. But I believe this is a linux problem instead of hardware architecture or virtualisation (Because previously it worked).

I was trying to create a new user account for ftp purpose. However I encountered the following error from YAST:

Error
The directory /home is not writable.
Choose another path for the home directory.

But I am using root account:

linux03:/ # ls -ld /home
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 0 Feb 22 17:31 /home

/home should be writable. I have tried to change it to 777 but still got the error.

linux03:/ # df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/dasda1 373M 109M 245M 31% /
udev 121M 108K 121M 1% /dev
/dev/mapper/system--vg-opt--lv
372M 36M 318M 11% /opt
/dev/mapper/system--vg-tmp--lv
372M 17M 337M 5% /tmp
/dev/mapper/system--vg-usr--lv
2.0G 741M 1.2G 39% /usr
/dev/mapper/system--vg-var--lv
496M 71M 400M 16% /var

"/" still has plenty of space..

Can anyone please give me some hint?

Thank you very much.

Can you post the output of "mount" and "df -i"

Hi AlucardZero,

Thanks for your reply. This is the outputs:

linux03:~ # mount
/dev/dasda1 on / type ext3 (rw,acl,user_xattr)
proc on /proc type proc (rw)
sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw)
debugfs on /sys/kernel/debug type debugfs (rw)
udev on /dev type tmpfs (rw)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,mode=0620,gid=5)
/dev/mapper/system--vg-opt--lv on /opt type ext3 (rw,acl,user_xattr)
/dev/mapper/system--vg-tmp--lv on /tmp type ext3 (rw,acl,user_xattr)
/dev/mapper/system--vg-usr--lv on /usr type ext3 (rw,acl,user_xattr)
/dev/mapper/system--vg-var--lv on /var type ext3 (rw,acl,user_xattr)
automount(pid1281) on /home type autofs (rw,fd=4,pgrp=1281,minproto=2,maxproto=4)

linux03:~ # df -i
Filesystem Inodes IUsed IFree IUse% Mounted on
/dev/dasda1 98560 3976 94584 5% /
udev 30862 204 30658 1% /dev
/dev/mapper/system--vg-opt--lv
98304 3602 94702 4% /opt
/dev/mapper/system--vg-tmp--lv
98304 16 98288 1% /tmp
/dev/mapper/system--vg-usr--lv
262144 35408 226736 14% /usr
/dev/mapper/system--vg-var--lv
131072 1552 129520 2% /var

I am not very sure whether the last line in "mount" output tells something.. Your advise?

Thank you very much.

It does. /home is automounted, which is defined in /etc/auto.master. It'll be an NFS mount that you don't have write access to as root. To create a local user you should change the place where yast2 tries to create its home directory.
