SLED - Apps Disappear after Minimizing
 

If I minimize an application whether it be Firefox, OpenOffice, or anything else it disappears. For what it's worth I do have XGL enabled with desktop effects. I also have a panel at the bottom of the desktop that contains seven icons. Perhaps it's because I have the cube enabled. I'll try disabling it. Just wondered if anyone else has experienced this.

Are Programs Still Somewhere?
 

When you start Firefox for instance, do you get a new session or the last one back? Do the programs crash when they are minimized? I would ask that you place your mouse pointer on the task bar and right click your mouse. Pick configure panel and then in the configure Window select Taskbar. See if "Show windows from all desktops" is checked. You can also right click on the desktop and pick Configure Desktop. Then select Multiple Desktops to see how many are setup to display. I seem to remember you get four desktops by default with Compiz/xgl loaded and activated. Actual programs are shown in something called a Pager and there is a Pager layout configuration. You can right click on the Pager when loaded and select options that configures how loaded programs are shown.

James, thanks for your response. I'm running SLED10. It's supposed to be updated to SP1 but I'm beginning to wonder about that. Right Clicking the bottom panel does not bring up the items you indicated. Add to Panel, Lock Panel, Properties, etc. are what I see. Also, when I click on the Desktop - Create Folder, Launcher and Document are what I see first. Perhaps, something is really wrong here. I do know that when I attempt to resize I get the little hand that will do nothing and minimize closes anything that I have had open. I've never seen this one before. Roll up and down works fine..

Try a Fresh SLED SP1 Installation.
 

Did you download the latest SLED 10 SP1 version or upgrade the original version to SP1? I might suggest you download the SP1 version and reload because something sounds very wrong. I would not point SP1 to any non-SLED installation sources until I had the basic install working. I can only say that I have not seen this type of problem before and if it were me I would try again with a fresh installation.

Thanks very much for your response. I did "update" the original version to SP1 via instructions from Novell. I have since downloaded SP1 and burned to CD so I do have those. I have a dual boot system SUSE10 and SLED10. Not sure what the best way to install from the disks would be to do a clean install. Any suggestions? Thanks much

Got to keep the two SLED versions from messing up each other.
 

Well, you boot from CD 1 like normal. The big thing will be to make sure the copy of SLED you are going to replace is mapped to the root folder "/" and the copy you want to keep should be something like "/SLED1". You can use the same swap file for both copies. I would make sure I had a copy of the load lines from your grub menu.lst that is loading the copy of SLED 1 you want to keep. If you are successful in leaving copy 1 of SLED alone, you will have access to its /boot/grub/menu.lst file ( it will be /SLED1/boot/grub/menu.lst in copy 2) after your installation. I normally load grub into the partition I am loading the last version of Linux in to on my system and move other menu.lst entries to the latest grub installation. You only need one copy of grub to load all of your programs. SLED seems to modify its own copy of grub when you update the kernel which means the first copy of SLED may modify its old grub and not the one in the second copy of grub. You will have to manually move any kernel changes for SLED 1 to the grub copy you installed for SLED 2.

Well, after a few bumps I'm up an running again after a new install. The cdrom disks that I made did not allow me to boot to them. I ended up downloading the dvd iso for SLED10 SP1 and booted to that. The install went very well and I now am able to minimize without any problem. I did find that there initially was an issue with launching Konqueror from its icon although no problem launching it from the command line. I've decided to use KDE vs Gnome as my desktop and now there is no problem with Konqueror. Your help is much appreciated.
