Simple Performance Tests with AMD64 & Suse

I just bought an AMD 64 3000+ and have settled on Suse as my distro.

I am a little disappointed with the performance. Are there are simple tests that I could run to get an indication of comparisons with other computers?

I did locate this link, but wasn't sure which one to try and where to find other benchmarks.
http://ltp.sourceforge.net/tooltable.php

Also, did I do the right thing buying the AMD 3000+ or would a P4 prescott 3ghz have been a faster computer.

This may assist you if you're having performance issues:

I just ordered an HP laptop with a 64 bit chip and have been doing a lot of reading.

I guess some other advise I'd give you based upon my readings is to install 32 bit versions of Firefox since there is no 64 bit support for any plugins that go with it. (ie...Flash, etc...)

Good luck.

If you have not modified BIOS options, then you should:
Disable Cool'n quitet option, otherwise your CPU will run with the half of the speed. (~900MHz instead of ~1.8GHz)

Then you need to optimize OS of course, but this is another story.

Thanks guys.

That was an exellent link to the previous thread. I will go through it tonight and hopefully speed things up! It really does not feel as fast as what it should be - based on my past processor/linux experience.

I'll check the cool&quiet setting.

Thanks.
