Setting up a HP 2600N printer on Linux

Hi Guys,

We have just purchased a HP Colour Laserjet 2600N and need to be able to print to this from our Suse Linux workstations at a remote site. I am very new to linux and unfortunately the only connection we have to the server and machines at the remote site (where the printer is) is through the command line interface - using "Putty"
So basically im just after any advice at all as to how we go about setting this up so that all of the workstations there can print to this printer, i assume we need to setup a print queue on the server in a similar way to how it would be done in Windows but I have no idea how to do that through the command line (if its possible). I can talk someone there through adding the printer on the workstation machines, its more of just the initial setup on the server I am worried about.
Also, I read somewhere that you need to make changes to the colour settings in Linux to get any kind of decent colours from these printers, can anyone elaborate on this?

Is this a networked printer or one using a jetdirect interface. If so, go to the http://hplip.sourceforge.net/ webpage and see if this printer is supported. Install the hplip package if you haven't already. Then use the cups web interface to setup the printer. "http://localhost:631"

Thanks but the CUPS web interface is not accessible because like i said, we only have access to this remote server using Putty to give us a command line view.

Anyway, I've managed to install it now using the foo2hp driver (and yes it was a networked printer) and followed the instructions on the following website: http://foo2hp.rkkda.com/

I also had to install the GCC compiler through Yast -> Software Management before I was able to use the Make command on the files mentioned on the above website.

Cheers
Chris
