Serial ATA drives and Linux

I have dell precision machine that is running 3 SATA hard drives. I put the hard drives into combination mode to get PATA and was able to successfully install SUSE Linux Novell OES however my linux install can only see 2 hard drives, when looking at the BIOS turning on PATA makes it so only 2 SATA hard drives show up. Is there someway to fix this in linux there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of options in the BIOS and normal mode the install hangs and I couldn't even install SUSE.

You will need to install software RAID via linux's RAIDutils.

Since I can't boot into linux witout the PATA Mode on is it possible to use software RAID, I guess what I need to know is can I do a software RAID on my existing two discs, go back into the bios and turn off PATA compatibility mode and then boot into linux? Or is my only option hardware RAID?

Neither of us know what your software options are because I don't know what SATA chipset driver boot disk matches your kernel/OS- or even if it exists. In which case, yes, you should do hardware RAID.
