Screen turns off after nvidia driver install

Hello, I followed the directions on suse and it seemed like it installed perfectly.
When I rebooted the screen just turned off. I went into /etc/X11/xorg.conf and edited the driver back to "nv" and the screen works now. this was right after a fresh install. Ive searched everywhere, but the onlything i can find is how to install it, which i already know how. I have a FX5900 if it makes a difference.

And a little off topic, but how can I set up a home network with my windows computer? And one last thing, i have a USB mic but i cant get skype to recognise it. i am using alsa, but it wont use the mic!

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I had a similar problem after installing the updated nvidia driver. Apparently, installing does not also LOAD the driver (under SuSE 9.3 Pro). After two attempts at intalling, my graphics were still messed up. A simple 'modprobe nvidia' fixed that. I've had no problems since then.

Since you don't name your distro, I'd say try to modprobe the driver and see what happens.

Sorry about not naming the distro. Im using SUSE 10.1. I tried to do modprobe nvidia, but nothing happened. Im kinda new, and i didnt know if i was just supposed to type that into the command line or not. I booted up into failsafe, logged in as root and typed that in, but htat did nothing. If i was supposed to do somthing else, can you please explain it a little? Thanks.
