Screen Grabs and The Gimp

I normally used Alt-PrtSc to grab a screen.

Then I would open The Gimp, open a new file and Paste the grab into The Gimp. Of late, I am unable to do this. Am I missing something here?

It seems it is only the desktop I can't grab in this fashion.

For all other grabs I just use File --> Acquire --> Past as New.

So the question is how do I get a screenshot of my desktop?

There is an application with KDE called ksnapshot. It does a marvelous job of capturing screenshots and window shots.
