Screen blanks every few moments regardless.
 

Running 9.2 Pro with newest upgrades and have a problem with the screen going blank every few moments whether i am working or not. It's like it is going into powersaver mode but I am on a desktop. I have set what I can find that says don't suspend, or go to standby etc. but it still does it. I'm new to Linux and not sure where to check. Appreciate any help offered to get it resolved. Thanks

Hey Xian I think we got it! I guess the next question I would have would be why would the screensaver cause it. The screensaver was set at 20mins. WHOOOPS. It just blanked again while I was typing, so it's still there. I think it took longer to do it tho'. Any other suggestions?

I would wager that for some reason the s/s is not registering your mouse movements or keyboard strokes properly. The reason behind this would require a bit of detective work on your part. Is there another method to connect that mouse to your tower? Are these devices configured properly?

The Keyboard is just a std ps2 KB and seems as tho' it was config. correctly. The mouse was an IBM USB optical. I have dug out a ps2 mouse of MSofts and hooked it up and will see if that makes a difference. Thanks for stickin' with me on this as I've only been playing with SuSe a cpl of days now so I've got a lot of head scratching to do. I'll check back in in a bit and let you know how it goes.

It looks like the problem is still there although it took almost 20 mins to go blank this time. I tried another keyboard and ps2 mouse, but no difference. Just keep looking I guess!

I'm just playing catch in the dark here, but it wouldn't hurt to verify that your monitor settings are correct. Did you correctly set your HorizSync and VertRefresh rates? Maybe try a lower resolution and/or DefaultDepth.

Checked on my monitors config and the settings are all well within the allowed monitor specs. running 1280x1024 78 hz 65M colors on a 19" Hitachi 776 Super Scan 22 dp CRT

There appears to be some common symptoms here and some different ones.

I have just upgraded from SuSE Pro 9.1 to 9.2 and seem to have a power management problem. I am running an Intel 2.8Ghz chip, 1Gb memory, 160 Gb ATA drive, a standard old PS/2 keyboard with a Logitech optical/USB/cordless mouse, and a Sylvania L17 LCD monitor. In the old SuSE I could set power management with slider bars to have the "sleep" mode of my monitor kick in after so many minutes. I had a screen saver that came on after 10 minutes and then the monitor went to sleep about 20 minutes later if I didn't do anything. When I try to do the same thing in 9.2 I get a message that I have a partial ACPI installed and should recompile my kernel. For my install I did a backup of all my files and then a full, new install from the SuSE DVD. The only non-standard thing I did was to add some extra software packages to the normal full KDE install. Then I did a manual process, using Yast and Control Center to set all my configurations and preferences again. I didn't copy any config files from my backups.

Now, after the time delay I set in the Control Center I get about 1 minute of the screen saver followed by my monitor going to sleep. I have changed both the screensaver pattern and the screensaver timing and both took effect, but didn't change the power issue. I can't find any way to adjust the time delay on the sleep due to the partial ACPI message (at least I think that's the issue?). Any ideas? It's not major issue, just a great big pain where I sit.

I have also noticed another odd problem now - my KMail configuration and my Knqueror file manager configuration don't seem to be written to disk. When I run a file manager under super user the configuration is stored. I check all the rc files and I do have read/write privileges and I am the owner. Odd stuff?

I do use APT4RPM/Synaptic to manage my packages, but I use a pretty conservative component set.

TitaniumTaz have you tried turning off power management on ur display. In the control center > peripherals > display, under the power control tab turn off display power management.

Don't know if this will work but just a thought!

To all who have helped with this a HUGE THANKS. I have managed to get the power saver disabled and the screen-saver turned off and so far it seems to be doing the trick..:D Just have to watch it for a bit and see. Once again Thanks Guys.
