SBC DSl Freeze During Suse install

SO I have just installed Suse 10.1 on my Hp machine. It has 512mb ram one 80 gig HD and one 40 gig Hard Drive it is 2.26 ghz processor. I have a realtek NIC installed that is connected directly to my DSL modem wich is some sort of Speed Stream. I have tried multiple different configurations when installing the DSL through YAST. 95% of the time the instal freezes when it hits 14% and says it is writting to device.

I have read alot of stuff about the settings some stuff has told me to enter hostnames and address and dns stuff but to be honest I am sure what all that stuff is so I am just guessing. It seems likeother people are having the same issues if there anywhere to find a very simple very detailed step by step way of doing it??

Thanks Everybody!!

hmmm, I have hp dv 8235nr and ATT/SBC DSL with the speedstreem, but I use a router too. It handles the wifi and (i think) dns stuff. Took @ 5 mins to setup. never tried straight to modem, so I'm not shure how diff. it is. I highly recommend using one tho.

Any details available?

Well I magically got it to work (I have no clue how) But I just kept playiing t\with the setttings and sure enoguht it works. NOw the issue I am facing is that it connects and I can search the internet for maybe 30 minutes and then it just disconnects. I try to go back to just like google.com and it tells me that the server cannot be found. I then dont know how to just simply reconnect so I have to restart the computer to reconnect. Anyone have any suggestions??? Or how do I just manually have the computer redial....

Sbc Dsl

You have 2 options (I did go through the same). You can log into your speedstream modem using 192.168.0.1 address. Under the advance options you have 3 choices PPPoE on modem, PPPoE on computer and the last one as PPPoE bridge or similar. The default is the first choice. I would suggest you to change it to second option on which the PPPoE is on the PC save it and modify your Suse box DSL setup. Specify the gateway as your modem IP address in your NIC detail setup. For DNS I would leave it auto, activation at bootup, include your username and password and save it. I remember there is an option for keep alive in modem setup choose it as auto will make your connection always on. ( I am using a router now so the instructions are almost 2 year old on the above setup ) anyway try it.
