i installed suse 10.1 over 10.0, and now i can not access shared folders in windows xp from suse. before i used to just write the ip in 'run application' and access it and now i cant.........do i have to set up the samba server or clien? if yes any help would be appreciated.
In order to use Samba in SuSE 10.1 there are several things you should do to get it up and running.
1.Edit three files in /etc/xinetd.d (SWAT,SERVICES,SERVERS) and change disable=yes to no and remark out the line only_from= 127.0.0.1 (add a # at the front of the line). You need to run the “File Manager – Super User Mode”, find the folder and files and right click with mouse and open with the editor of your choice. Making these changes allows you to start the xinetd service so you can run SWAT, a HTML service you can operate from Firefox to configure Samba.
2.Next, start up the Yast Control Center and goto System/System Services (Runlevel) and fire up the application. You must enter the root password to start YaST. Find the xinetd service, pick Set/Reset and enable the service and then pick Start/Stop/Refresh and Start the service. Do the same thing for the services smb and nmb. Once these three services are running you can use and modify Samba from Firefox using SWAT. Pick finish and save your changes.
3.Start Firefox and enter localhost:901 or 127.0.0.1:901. You should get a password prompt up. Enter the root name and root password and elect to save it. When you press enter you will see the complete Samba configuration screen. You can set your workgroup and PC name. Pick the Global shares for these settings. Make sure you set local and domain master to no or only have one PC set to local master and leave on all of the time.
If you have no help information shown, you can run YaST again and start Software Management. Search for Samba and load the Samba Document file so you can get very good online help.
OK, when you say it (Samba) does not work, just what does that mean?
1. Can you run SWAT through Firefox using localhost:901 or 127.0.0.1:901?
2. What name do you use for your workgroup name?
3. What is the name of the PC in Samba?
4. Did you know you should NOT use the same name for the Linux network name as for Samba? When you open up a terminal session, your text prompt includes your Linux PC name. For instance, my Linux PC name is Linuxmain. However, in Samba, I call my PC Linuxmaster and this is the name I see from all Windows workstations and Linux workstations using Samba. Further, the network name for the Linux side should not be the same as your workgroup name. My Linux network name is Linuxdomain but my Samba workgroup name is Windowsnt. Make sure that these names are not the same between the native Linux network setup and the setup you use in Samba.
5. Can you look through your workgroup from the Network Browser/SMB Shares?
6. Did you get the Samba documentation loaded so it can be viewed from SWAT?
