I have installed mysql with yast and run the command

/usr/bin/mysql_install_db

However mysql will not start in either yast's runlevel editor or with the command mysql. Whenever I try to access mysql I get the error:

#2002 - Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock

Am I missing something obvious to get mysql running. Thanks for any help in getting this running.

It sounds like you're doing all the right things.

For whatever it's worth, here's what I did on my SuSE 9.1/Professional system after the basic install:

1. Go into YaST2, Install/Remove Software:
<= ADDED mySQL 4.3.4 (Server), mysql-client, mySql shared libs (4.0.18), php4-mysql;
SAID "YES" TO ALL REQUESTED DEPENDENCIES

2. Went back into YaST2, System, Runlevel Editor:
mysql => ENABLED

3. Deleted the anonymous user; set an explicit password on the root user:
mysql -uroot mysql
delete from user where User='';
quit

mysqladmin -uroot password SOME-PASSWORD
mysqladmin -uroot -hlocalhost password THE-SAME-PASSWORD-AS-ABOVE
<= NOTE: THIS CREATES A PASSWORD FOR MYSQL USER "ROOT" FOR BOTH DEFAULT HOST AND LOCALHOST

mysqladmin reload

4. Verified everything by logging in and running some commands from the "mysql" command shell.

Still no luck. I tried reinstalling mysql and I was able to enable it the runlevel editor with no errors by I still get the error:

#2002 - Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock

When trying commands like:

mysqladmin -uroot password SOME-PASSWORD

If it helps any, I never got beyond that point, either. However, the mysql documentation looks like it can get you through it. (I gave up to concentrate on connecting to the internet.)

Assuming you've installed all needed components (mysql-shared, mysql and mysql-client), and assuming you have "root" permissions, try this (Suse Linux):

su - root
cd /etc/init.d
./mysql start

If the daemon comes up, then make sure the permissions in /var/lib/mysql are correct:

cd /var/lib
ls -lR mysql
<= SHOULD BE "mysql:daemon"

If necessary, then change the permissions manually:

chown -R mysql:daemon /var/lib/mysql
