Have you tried using sax2 to configure video and monitor? I for one am a little confused by split screen. Could you be more specific?

I don't believe I've heard of that before. When you boot, the grub menu offers option for boot. There will be at least two -- SuSE 10.0 and SuSE 10.0 Failsafe. Failsafe is a basic configuration that should work even when you have problems. Have you tried booting up with it?

That's a strange problem. I don't imagine where to fix it, but maybe you can reconfigure your display settings. I haven't done that in Suse but in Debian and Fedora. As this may help here is a brief.
For Fedora core 4:
#init 3
#system-config-display
then reconfigure your display settings
#init 5
For Debian 3.1:
#dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
then reconfigure your display settings
