remove zen updater from startup?
anyone know how to make it so zen updater doesnt run at system startup? ideally without having to edit a text file?

try yast2->systwm->system run levels->novell-zmd->disable->finish
|
simply deinstall crap:
libzypp-zmd-backend zen-updater ruby-zypp rug zmd mono-core mono-core-32bit mono-data mono-web log4net dbus-mono glib-sharp2 gtk-sharp2 do not try to uninstall: libzypp libzypp-devel these two libs have dependencies with half of Yast modules this will speed up Yast, make it more stable. All problems will be gone. Add SMART eventually and you are set. |
To just not have it run at startup disable the service as mentioned by google01103.
You can re-enable it later if you wish using the same method. |
I wonder why Novell love to use the crappy Mono. Is it just me or it's really slow?
|
When you disabled the zen service, it gives an error at kde startup. It complains if zen is not working. Why?

I switched it off and did not have any problems. Just make sure you do not run the applet that checks for updates (can't remember what its called).

In the applet, there is an option to not run ZEN when a user account starts. I have tried all the above mentioned remedies, but have been having problems with things such as VMware and slow application launches. I just turned the applet off and I do not even notice that ZEN is there.

I just had an update that trashed Zen updater (go figure). Funny thing is when i try to delete any of the mono anything - Yast wasts to delete Gnome and gcc and basically the entire openSuSE 10.2 OS. What is Novel doing with openSuSE? I am really starting to hate anything with Mono/.NET.
i can't even get the updater applet back, so i am not sure what is going on. i have Smart - working good, but heck to get rid of Mono looks like I may have to goto another distribution . . .??? here is a list of programs generated by yast that conflicts if you try to delete mono-core. i edited it to just the names as the list is very long. this is the short list when trying to get rid of zen/mono. this is only mono-core. I wish there was a way to gut it without gutting the OS so bad. #### YaST2 conflicts list - generated 2006-12-16 22:33:52 #### art-sharp2-2.8.3-33.i586 has missing dependencies beagle-0.2.12-28.i586 has missing dependencies mono(ICSharpCode.SharpZipLib) == 0.6.0.0 for beagle-0.2.12-28.i586 beagle-evolution-0.2.12-28.i586 has missing dependencies beagle-gui-0.2.12-28.i586 has missing dependencies beagle-index-10.2_20061101-31.i586 has missing dependencies beagle-thunderbird-0.2.12-28.i586 has missing dependencies dbus-1-mono-0.63-28.i586 has missing dependencies evolution-sharp-0.12.0-5.i586 has missing dependencies f-spot-0.2.2-28.i586 has missing dependencies gconf-sharp2-2.8.3-33.i586 has missing dependencies glade-sharp2-2.8.3-33.i586 has missing dependencies glib-sharp2-2.8.3-33.i586 has missing dependencies gmime-2.2.3-20.i586 has missing dependencies gnome-sharp2-2.8.3-33.i586 has missing dependencies gnome-vfs-sharp2-2.8.3-33.i586 has missing dependencies gsf-sharp-0.7-51.i586 has missing dependencies gtkhtml-sharp2-2.8.3-33.i586 has missing dependencies gtk-sharp2-2.8.3-33.i586 has missing dependencies gtk-sharp2-gapi-2.8.3-33.i586 has missing dependencies helix-banshee-0.11.2-17.i586 has missing dependencies helix-banshee-engine-gst-0.11.2-17.i586 has missing dependencies helix-banshee-engine-helix-0.11.2-17.i586 has missing dependencies helix-banshee-plugins-default-0.11.2-17.i586 has missing dependencies helix-banshee-plugins-extra-0.11.2-17.i586 has missing dependencies kdebase3-beagle-3.5.5-78.i586 has missing dependencies kerry-0.2.1-8.i586 has missing dependencies kio_beagle-0.3.1-34.i586 has missing dependencies mono-data-1.1.18.1-12.i586 has missing dependencies mono-data-sqlite-1.1.18.1-12.i586 has missing dependencies mono-web-1.1.18.1-12.i586 has missing dependencies pattern:gnome-10.2-145.i586 has missing dependencies pattern:gnome_imaging-10.2-145.i586 has missing dependencies pattern:zmd-10.2-145.i586 has missing dependencies rug-7.1.100.0-34.i586 has missing dependencies tomboy-0.4.1-38.i586 has missing dependencies tomboy-0.4.1-38.i586 zen-updater-7.1.100-39.i586 has missing dependencies mono(Mono.GetOptions) == 1.0.5000.0 for zen-updater-7.1.100-39.i586 zmd-7.1.100.0-46.i586 has missing dependencies #### YaST2 conflicts list END ### |
I have recently discovered that Mono in and of itself does not really slow the Suse system down. The slow down occurs as a result of the Zen updater daemon and the default package manager. Mono is simply an interpreted language similar to C, C++ or C#. If you remove mono-core you are removing an integral interpretor to many programs. It is as bad as removing gcc in a sense.
If you want to speed up your SuSE computer, you only have to search and remove packages with the following: 1. zmd 2. zen 3. beagle 4. kerry 5. suse register I have left beagle on my machine and did not really notice any diference in performance. I do however disable the beagle addon within firefox because I do not want indexing of my web usage (for privacy reasons) :) |
