remote desktop to a linux box from windows


i know i can use vnc. but when i do it opens up a new session not the same session. i want to be able to do the equivalent of a remote assistance and take over my suse box from windows or another nix disto am i missing a setting somewhere?

check out x11vnc or the integrated vnc option on newer releases of xorg-x11

I am using x11vnc now as we speak and its still a separate session

well that's x11vnc's primary, if not sole, purpose. http://www.karlrunge.com/x11vnc/ are you running it as the same person who own's the active X server.

well what i want to do is be able to either remote home (opensuse 10.2) or to some of our boxes here at work (1 running ubuntu and the other is opensuse 10.2 as well)
the work ones is cause i am too lazy to want to get up and make a change..

Are you are sure you are pointing the vncviewer at the correct VNC display? E.g. vncviewer host:0 or vncviewer host:1, etc?

What VNC display does x11vnc print out when it starts? (also in the PORT=NNNN line).

Also, are you running "x11vnc -display :0 ..." where :0 is the desired X display? (i.e. not picking up the Xvnc one)
