Hi, I'm a bit of a n00b myself but have tried to get this working under Fedora (now using suse) and it turned out to be a real nightmare, it also depends alot on the sound card you have, if you have a soundblaster you should be able to get it working if you are only using onboard you will not, search these forums and Google and you may come across something.
As I have only just installed Suse and am getting used to things really I won't be able to help too much.
