"protected" packages in YaST?

I'm trying to install kino and audacity on my 9.1 personnal so I added installation source "ftp://ftp.suse.com/...../i386/9.1" and I run into a dependency problem with wxGTK being protected:

#### YaST2 conflicts list - generated 2005-02-20 20:42:17 ####

wxGTK 2.4.2.4-138 conflict
Required by:
audacity requires libwx_gtk2-2.4.so.0
audacity requires libwx_gtk2-2.4.so.0(WXGTK2_2.4)
freqtweak requires libwx_gtk2-2.4.so.0
freqtweak requires libwx_gtk2-2.4.so.0(WXGTK2_2.4)
Conflict Resolution:
( ) Do Not Set wxGTK to Protected
( ) Remove All 2 Referring Packages
Do Not Install audacity
Do Not Install freqtweak
( ) Ignore Conflict and Risk System Inconsistencies
wxGTK-devel 2.4.2.4-138 conflict
Conflict Resolution:
( ) Do Not Set wxGTK-devel to Protected
( ) Ignore Conflict and Risk System Inconsistencies

The users guide indicates that packages are sometimes protected just because they are "unsigned" by suse. So I was wondering if I can confidently un-protect these packages.

Anybody have suggestions?

Are you asking whether it is safe to unprotect, or how to unprotect?

If the question is HOW, just right-click the protected package in YaST, and change its status from the context menu.

If the question is "is it safe" - the answer is a definite indefinite YMMV. ;) There is no clear answer, because your configuration varies from mine, and mine varies from the next person's. It all comes down to what your system's dependencies are.

A better answer is: you can take note of which version is currently installed, elect to unprotect and upgrade it, and test your applications. If you find a problem, you can always downgrade later. :)
