Prompted for Password When Configuring Printer

My printer was working before, but now it's not. I'm pretty sure it was working after I reformatted, but I really can't say 100%.

It won't appear on the list when I try to print something, so I tried to configure it. Unfortunately, it wants a user name and password. What username/password? I really couldn't say. My root username and password don't work, and neither do my regular user account and password. The odd thing is that this is a local HP printer, connected through a parallel port. It's not over some kind of network where one would expect this sort of blockout.

The odd thing is that when I configured it, it appeared on the list, with the correct name and model and everything, so it looks like the computer detects it, something else is going on here.

I'm really not sure what to do here. I have a homework assignment that I need to print, but I'm unable to because of this problem. Can someone help?

Using SUSE Linux 9.3 Professional. I should also note that Samba, both the client and the server, which were working perfectly before, are now also out of operation. My friend helped me set up apache, php and mysql on the comp shortly before I noticed this, but he says this couldn't have caused it.

Are you just trying to configure your printer through the YaST2 Control Center? If so, I'm not sure what password it's after other than the root pasword when you first login. Had anything new been installed, if Samba has been knocked out too? I don't quite understand what you mean by needing a username + password to configure it, but you say it's already listed as being installed with the right settings - where is it saying this?

I'm afraid I don't remember. I went through a lot of unfamiliar gui, trying different things, and I can't seem to find that screen again. I managed yesterday to configure it without getting a password prompt (seemed completely random), but even then, it didn't print, nothing happened. I tried for hours desperately trying to get it to print something, but to no avail.

I woke up this morning, and all the paper available to the printer had been used while I was sleeping, while the computer was OFF. The pages told the story of everything I had tried to print the previous day. It had taken about 9 hours to respond, but it printed all of it alright.

After that, my printer started behaving again. Now it prints things instantly. I'll never know what happened, but at least it works.

Thanks for trying to help though.

I saw the same thing using the printer manager. I did however try selecting the administrator mode button, entered my root password and everything worked.
