Problems with via tech vt8233 sound device

the only sound i get from my suse 10.0 kde sounds like a cd skipping. I've been following some directions from alsa-project.org. I get stuck in one part because i dont know what the destination folder is supposed to be. Heres where i get stuck:

cd /usr/src
mkdir alsa
cd alsa
cp /downloads/alsa-driver-1.0.14.tar.bz2( i guess im supposed to have a destination folder at the end of that but I have no idea what it is supposed to be)

i try doing it that way but it says cannot stat no file or directory named "alsa"

when i try extracting the file to the right location it says i dont have premission to write there put a different folder.
