Problems with / directory and other problems

Okay, my first problem is Suse says that the KDE internal communications are broken. As a result of this I can't log into any graphical interface, I can only log into text based interface. This wouldn't be so bad BUT it chops out after about 20 of seconds. So I only have short time periods of investigating. I think that this is because my / directory is full and I think that the reason this is full is because I have some large run-away log files (So I have been informed) that I need to delete.

Still with me? There is more...

I have a file in my /home/me directory which starts with a - symbol, and whenever I do du -sm * | sort -n to find the big files it comes up with the file that starts with the - symbol. I have been trying to delete this file without sucess, can anyone offer any hints?

I then thought, I can just reinsert the installation DVD and do an update. Unfortunately when I do this it keeps asking me to delete the zen installer, I try to do this but it refuses, so this option is not possible.

I can do a complete reinstall but I would rather try and fix it. Can anyone offer any advice?

Mat

Do you have this problem with other user accounts as well (e.g. root)?

You could try to delete the - file with rm "-<name>" or use a backslash to mark the dash as special character: rm \-<name>

To delete the log files, you could boot from CD (e.g. KNOPPIX) and remove the files from there.

At which stage does it ask to remove zen? Couldn't you switch zen to "install" instead of "remove"?

It may be an option to run system repair from the installation CD. Have a look here:

I can't login to ANY graphical desktop. I can only login to the basic xwindow and console. As for users, I can login as whomever I like.

I will have ago at doing what you suggested.

I get trouble from the zen installer when SUSE checks my hardware and software (when I select update from the beginning menu). It comes up in the packages module saying it needs some attention. The program it says it needs to delete is the zen installer in order for the update to continue. I will try to switch to install and see what I get.

Thanks for your help.
