I just installed kernel update for 11.1 with what appeared to be the right
driver. When [I] rebooted, here's the output from dmesg|grep video:

Your cam is a Ricoh (05ca:1836), maybe rebuild the Linux UVC driver?

new driver

The drivers seem to work fine.

The (minor) problem was that I had to do a soft boot. The firmware
stays loaded because I did not power off, then everything works
fine.

It seems to be a timing issue.

I seldom to a hard boot anyway, so an extra soft boot for when I
really want to use the webcam is not really a problem.

Perhaps this might be useful information for others who have
the same camera: Ricoh r5u870.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't want to put much more
effort into this at this time.
