Problem with scheduling shutdown

I wanted to schedule a shutdown time for my pc.What i did was in the su mode, i typed crontab -e, pressed enter then 'a' to insert the code/line which looked like this:
40 22 * * * /sbin/shutdown -h now

pressed Esc then :wq! to save.

From the contrab -l output, it shows that its been installed but the shutdown is not initiated when it is 10:40 pm.

Any help? Thanks.

Check the root's mail for any error message from the cron job or redirect stdout and stderr to a file for further checking:
Code:
40 22 * * * /sbin/shutdown -h now > $HOME/cron.log 2>&1
