Problem installing SpamAssassin on SuSE 9.1

I am attempting to install SpamAssassin on my SuSE 9.1 Pro system. I have downloaded the tar ball from the SpamAssassin site (latest) and done an rpmbuild on the tarball and get 3 rpms as a result.

perl-Mail-spamassassin-3.0.4.i586.rpm
spamassassin-3.0.4.i586.rpm
spamassassin-tools.3.0.4.i586.rpm

Installing the perl rpm is no problem as is the spamassassin tool rpm. However, when I attempt to install the actual spamassassin rpm, it installs but says that spamassassin is not a service and that it has an error at line 13 /etc/rc.d/init.d/functions can't find a file or directory. The thing is that SuSE 9.1 doesn't have an /etc/rc.d/init.d/ directory or even an /etc/rc.d/init.d/functions directory or file. I think this is something that is common on other distributions. So, now it has given this error but it does install. When I attempt to run the script /etc/init.d/spamassassin, it simply gives me errors again looking for this /etc/rc.d/init.d/functions file as well as a few others.

I have tried both 3.0.4 and 3.0.2 but with the same result.

Has anyone managed to install spamassassin 3.0.x on a SuSE distro? If so, how did you get around these issues?

Where did you get these RPM's? /etc/rc.d/init.d/functions is usually a RedHat function.

The 3.0.2 rpms came from www dot qmailrocks dot org as prepackaged rpms. The 3.0.4 rpms came from spamassassin dot apache dot org. The one from Spamassassin's site was downloaded as a Mail-SpamAssassin-3.0.4.tar.gz and built as per the instructions on the site i.e. rpmbuild -tb Mail-SpamAssassin-3.0.4.tar.gz

I'm not surprised if it is a redhat style configuration. Any suggestions how I install on SuSE? If the default configuration is setup for redhat, I may have as much trouble is I make the installation rather than use the rpms.

Check the SuSE ftp server (or better yet a mirror). SuSE 9.1 has it's own rpm builds for these applications. Once installed use yast to upgrade them to the latest version. That will resolve these issues.

Managed to find rpms on SuSE's ftp site under http://ftp.isr.ist.utl.pt/pub/MIRROR...eople/choeger/ They didn't work at first but after some hair pulling, I managed to get it to work. One thing to note, the service names are not what other programs might be expecting so some symlinks may be needed.
