problem getting grub to boot SuSE 10 from MBR

Hi

Performed fresh install of SuSE 10 and everything went well, but cannot boot from MBR. I can boot existing installation from CD-ROM or from grub> prompt typing
Code:
root (hd0,1)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz
initrd /boot/initrd
boot
I have tried reloading MBR from YaST by selecting 'other', 'start new', 'propose new setting' making sure MBR and not hda2 is selected, and wrote it by clicking 'finish'. Verified that a valid /boot/grub/menu.lst file exists. It does. Tried correcting it from grub> prompt typing
[code]
root (hd0,1)
-> filesystem type is reiserfs, partition type 0x83
setup (hd0)
-> Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists... yes
-> Checking if "/boot/grub/stage2" exists... yes
-> Checking if "/boot/grub/reiserfs_stage1_5" exists... yes
-> Running "embed /boot/grub/reiserfs_stage1_5 (hd0)"... 18 sectors are embedded.. succeeded
-> Running "install /boot/grub/stage1 (hd0) (hd01+18 p (hd0,1)/boot/grub/stage2 /boot/grub/menul.lst"... succeeded
-> Done
Whether I type 'reboot' or use the power switch, I see message 'grub loading' stage 1.5 flash and I am back to the grub> prompt. I see GNU GRUB version 0.96 at the top of the screen (639K lower / 130048K upper memory) displayed with command line options. I was able to boot same machine using grub to SuSE 9.2 before and it worked fine. I have /dev/hda1 and /dev/hda2 partitions, with /dev/hda1 as swap 0x82 and /dev/hda2 as reiserfs 0x83. The problem I believe is with stage 1.5. Grub thinks adjecent is the primary partition and ends up in swap when it goes there, instead of loading from the primary. I have setup non-root accounts and passwords. Below is the menu.lst file
Code:
color white/blue balck/light-gray
default 0
timeout 8
gfxmenu (hd0,1)/boot/message

/dev/fd0 /media/floppy subfs noauto,fs=floppyfss,procuid,nodev,nosuid,sync 0 0
I've read the manuals, but cannot seem to find the fix for this. I have tried reinstating the MBR but I am stuck with the grub> prompt. Is there something that I possibly missed? There are no other OSes installed and I did format the partitions with fdisk correctly prior to the install.

With kindest regards,

joe

At the grub> prompt type as root if you are using terminal

root (hd0,1) hit enter
setup (hd0) hit enter

That should setup your mbr.
