Make sure you have hplip installed. If you don't use cups, you might just need the hplip-hpijs package.
Also things will go smoother if you enter your username/password using the lppasswd program. At least for SuSE 9.3 and on cups runs as the "lp" user, and doesn't allow you to use root for authentication in the printer setup.
If you get a cups username/password dialog during the process, enter the lppasswd values.
If this doesn't help, you need to supply more information than "no workie".
