Pony Up!

I just upgraded my PC from a dual boot of win2k/SuSE 9.0 to SuSE 9.2 (no windows at all) and I must say I'm impressed. The installation went flawlessly and the only tinkering I had to do was installing the nvidia drivers which was that much of a pain at all. In fact, I would go as far as to say the installation was smoother than my last installation of win2k; just think of all the hardware disks you have to feed in to setup the drivers.

The difference in the OS itself from 9.0 to 9.2 is amazing! Just think what can be accomplished in the next few releases if they have some more R&D capital to spend on it. So I want to say to all you out there that might be thinking of using SuSE, or any other distro, pony up and buy the product. It's really worth it and in addition, the only way companies will start to make an real investment in linux is if they see a viable market. And once they do, it'll be like a tidal wave and then everyone will want in on the ride (that might swallow MS).

One other point: get behind a horse. If you like a particular distro then support it with both your mouth and wallet. We need some consolidation among all the distros out there (there's way to much) and need some big boys out there to swallow up the little ones. I think RedHat and SuSE are well on there way to being the leaders and few others would be nice as well.

Thanks for you time.

That about sums it up. Nice post. I agree, SuSE 9.2 is the most polished desktop distro I have come across. It is far easier to install and configure on the machine listed below. People often forget what a pain installing a Windows system can be, what with all the driver disks and conflicts. SuSE is well worth the purchase price, and it is making people take note of the developments taking place on the Linux desktop.
