playing encrypted dvds on suse 10

i've tried install some different players (ogle, mplayer, livid and i think its something like vnlan), but i always get some error, i have xine, and some different frontends for it installed, but when i try to install libdvdcss for kaffeine it doesnt work, then i tried navdvd for the xine player, but i got an error while installing that so i was just wondering if any1 knows any different players that work well, or how to get xine or kaffeine working

This is an all-time favourite question.

Have a look at the packman repository, which offers many multimedia-related packages. Get rid of the SUSE packages first, as they may be restricted in use due to copyright reasons.

If you don't have libdvdcss, you can get it here...
www.polinux.upv.es/~vfernandez/suse/10.0.

If you *do* have libdvdcss, check in the xine engine setup for Kaffeine, that you have the correct source for the DVD media. I spent a couple of days of abject frustration getting error messages telling I had "inadequate rights" to access my DVDs, when the actual problem was I needed to change the default DVD player in xine from /dev/dvd to /dev/cdwriter, my combo DVD/CD-RW .

I'm running the latest updates for Kaffeine, libxine1, W32codec-all and libdvdcss2, and it all works great.

Pacman is a great place to find things. Since the process of getting it to work is a little envolved you may find the following site more helpful because its only purpose is playing commercial DVDs.

packman

Know for sure that Packman provides a great service to the Suse users. Without his support Suse linux multimedia would be sorely lacking. Thanks Packman!

Guru provides great service also.

If you install Suse, adding these two repositories to your system is a must!

See the sticky thread on repositories in this forum:

Note: you will need to find libdvdcss elsewhere as noted in a post above to play encrypted dvds.

I make regular trips to packman and guru, frequently using what they offer. They are both Linux generalists. I have found a site that is a DVD movie specialist and it has served me well in that capacity -- including libdvdcss.
