Performans Configuration and tweeks.

Hi, I am new to linux but not PCs (25yrs of experiance.).

I have two PCs that are similar
The profiles are:

PC 1
Asus Mother Board
Operation: System XP pro SP@
PIII 1000 GHZ
388 KB Memoery
40 MB HD
D-Link Ethernet Card

PC 2
Asus Mother Board
Operation: Sse 9.2 Pro
PIII Celeron 800 GHZ
256 KB Memoery
40 MB HD
3Com 509c BIC

Any suggestions as to how improve PC 2performance? It is much slower than PC1 (boot up time, time for applications to load, Time for Broswe Pages to load etc) I know I have Linux on the lessor PC, however I was under the understanding that Linus was not bloated as Windows and therefore would run better than Windows.

Are there any teeks changes (hardware or software) tha can make my Linux PC perform better.

Thax

At the risk of sounding like a smart a&&, I shall start with the obvious:

1) Your PC 2 has a processor that is 20% slower than PC 1. I would expect approximately a 20% slower boot time, etc. Get a faster processor.
2) PC 2 has only 256K memory? Let's hope that is a typo (256M, maybe?). At any rate, more memory is a quick and easy way to improve performance under any OS. More memory means less swapping to drives, etc.
3) Review your installed packages on your Suse. Did you just accept the standard installation, or did you add/subtract packages? I would go through each package with a critical eye. It does take some time. But you might find that you have all manner of drivers installed that are trying to activate, timing out, and soaking up time and resources for things you don't have (Bluetooth, IR drivers, PDA connectivity items, modems, etc.).
4) Also, review your boot log. Anything popping up with any errors or indicating that it is timing out? It may be an item I described in #3, or there may be a configuration problem that is preventing something from operating optimally.

Those are some places to start, at least. I suspect others will also have good ideas of where to start...
