Hi all,
I installed 9.3 about a week ago and still cannot configure my parallel printer in yast..
It says the parallel port "lp0 "is not configured..I entered the address 0378-xxx as shown in the help section but yast still balks..I looked in the ports section and did not see 'paraport0' listed as in other distros...
My question is how do you tell suse/yast or terminal to install the port? i cannot see anyway to do it..
Thank you for any suggestions or help..
jolphil
Later edit: i did a lsmod and paraport is listed in the kernel modules but not listed in the runlevel..
Any help is appreciated for this perplexing problem
To get the parallel printer detected and configured, you need 4 modules loaded: first, load parport and scsi_mod; they have no dependencies on other modules (from the command line, do 'modinfo parport' and 'modinfo scsi_mod'). Next, load module lp, and last module imm. Use modprobe instead of insmod, as in 'modprobe parport', etc.
Then lsmod to see that they are loaded.
Then, start the Kde Control Center. Click YaST2 Modules, then Hardware, and finally Printer. Click on the Administrator Mode button, and supply the root password when prompted. Yast will try to detect the printer (in fact, it should have been detected and 6 default printer configs set up during installation - printers ranging from draft to photo).
If there are no printer configs found, highlight the Other (not configured) in the top panel of the screen, then click on the Configure button on the right, and begin configuring printers (you can have more than one config for the same printer, depending on whether you want draft quality [with or without color], normal, or photo quality).
If there are any printers already configured, they will be listed in the bottom part of the screen.
First, thank you for you reply and I apologize for not getting back sooner..
I looked and the four modules you stated are indeed loaded..Went to yast but during the configuration just after selecting the parallel port when i click "OK' it states,
" No Parallel devices(/dev/lp?) found. It seems that your parallel port is not properly configured"
I have even tried to add an I/O address but that still wont work..
It's a big puzzle to me as to why not..My suse 9.2 works fine on the very same system and printer..
