openSuSE10.2 printing broke

Hello all, I had openSUSE 10.2 i386 on 3 computers, now down to one for the time being. It seems I can not print all of a sudden. Was working then stopped on all 3. This is repeatable on Gnome or KDE desktop, to both an Epson injet and a Brother HL-5040 laser. Cups will see it, but it seems YAST2 is broken bad, yet again in this distribution.

When i try to re-install the printer Yast just hangs on 4%, and nothing - for hours. If I set either printer up in cups - I can only print from the cups localhost:631 page, not in Gnome or KDE. the weird part is this also hangs when you drop down to init 3, and run yast. Same hang at 4%. . .

So, from Yast ( and smart on another machine) - I removed Cups, and re-installed it. Well - that just blew up Suse - so at this point it would have been easier to format and re-install. As bad as 10.1 was - i was at least always able to print, and re-configure cups/Yast printing.

i am starting to think Novell is making SUSE more like microsoft . . .

Any ideas what is going on - for when i do try to re-install opensuse 10.2 on a standby computer? I definitely need printing, and am trying to keep suse on some of my computers. Ubuntu, and PCLOS work just great for the time being. . . even an Ubuntu print server through ipp

EDIT --- Read below. using smart to downgrade cups worked ( at least for me ); to restore cups 1.2.7-3

YAST2 Printer Appears Broken

I also had a similar experience with the Printer. I have a working print system via the various applications after setting up the printer initially in SUSE 10.2, however, I wanted to try a printer reconfig to access CUPS in XFCE. I primarily run a GNOME desktop. After going into YAST2 to reconfig the printer it hanged at 4% and did not move at all.
Has a bug report been sent to OPENSUSE?

I am running the X64 version of OPENSUSE 10.2.

Bug Reported

Looks like a bug report was filed today as Bug 230253 and coincides with the lastest CUPS update patch. The driver database is what seems to hang at 4%.

Duster 12-22-2006 04:20 AM

Thank for the update. dec 21 is my aniversary so i am not looking too deep into it. The update is greatly appreciated. Hopefully this will get fixed soon, since his release is really good, but for this fatal flaw.

Update on Broken YAST Printer

Seems there are multiple bug reports on this one.
The bug report that is presently being worked on is 229231.

Any one get any further with their CUPS woes? I am unable to print via a networked HP Desk Jet 722C using a D-Link DP300U print server. It can connect and see the print server but I never can print to the printer.

slackass 01-07-2007 09:13 PM

They issued an update fix for this but I had to get a new update source to get it.---?????????

You're not sure of the update source then? I'd love to get it figured out. I spent all weekend tweaking with no luck.

Duster 01-08-2007 07:20 AM

what I have done for now is DOWNGRADED to the origional cups that came on the DVD for openSuse 10.2.

Sorry it took so long to get back, but I just set up by opensuse 10.2 print server today. moved from an Ubuntu.

Thanks man I'll give that a shot and see what happens. Thanks.

mordak 01-08-2007 06:31 PM

OK I give up, how the heck did you downgrade your installation? I tried to remove the cups rpm in Yast but no dice. I also tried the "Remove Software" deal and that didn't work either.

slackass 01-08-2007 10:07 PM

Well, yesterday I installed a new update source that fixed one of my boxes. Now, today the only one that worked hung right at the same place,(4%).

Duster 01-09-2007 07:20 PM

Sorry - I should have stated. I use Smart. I hate the Suse updater.

You can literally just copy and paste from this site.
http://susewiki.org/index.php?title=Smart

Most of the time I prefer the command line, but for this I preferred the gui.

once you get smart in

smart update
smart install smart-gui

then
smart --gui

in the search type cups
select the older version.

I hope this helps

The Cups that is working for me is 1.2.7-3@i586
I also have an openSUSE 10.2 print server runng from this, as well as this laptop, and another desktop.

Some reason why 1.2.7-3.2 is hanging @ 4%

Try out smart. i think you will like it, and I do hope it helps.

I believe the problem (from what I can see in smart) is there is no cups client 1.2.7-3.2, only 1.2.7-3.

mordak 01-10-2007 05:32 AM

Thanks very much for the info. I will give it a shot and see what happens. ;)

Duster 01-10-2007 05:30 PM

Today I saw there was a cups update to cups 1.2.7-3.3
I updated through Smart and this one is worse than the buggy 1.2.7-3.2
3.2 just hung at 4%
3.3 Hangs at 4% and will forever ( I presume ) run my A64 3200+ at 100% CPU - and does Nothing
So, from my experience, still do not update cups. 3.3 is still broken very bad.

# cat /proc/version
Linux version 2.6.18.2-34-default (geeko@buildhost) (gcc version 4.1.2 20061115 (prerelease) (SUSE Linux)) #1 SMP Mon Nov 27 11:46:27 UTC 2006

I was able to use smart to downgrade once again to cups 1.2.7-3. I had to kill Yast with control-alt-esc, then re-run smart --gui. Only small catch is I had to go to init 3, then back to init 5 to get my KDE desktop happy again.
Either way - I was able to get my printing back with cups 1.2.7-3 via SMART.

As I tried right now, bugzilla is down at the link from http://en.opensuse.org/Submitting_Bu...eporting_a_Bug. So I can not report this yet.
"An error occurred while loading https://bugzilla.novell.com/enter_bu...openSUSE+10.2:
Could not connect to host bugzilla.novell.com."

Please let me know if the SMART fix to downgrade to 1.2.7-3 works. If enough people get that to work - should this be a sticky for opensuse 10.2?

openSUSE 10.2 printing broke

If you have not already found a cure for the above problem then this is the answer.

In openSUSE 10.2 Bugzilla bug number 229231 causes YaST2 to hang in the printer database.
Go to RPMfind.net and select the download for
yast2-printer-2.14.17-6.

Install this with zen installer then go to YaST2. Select Hardware and then Printer. Add your printer. It may be a good idea to remove any existing default printer unless you are using more than one printer. You will be able to perform a test print part way through this procedure.

If you have not yet fixed the problem then this will do so.

In openSUSE 10.2 Bugzilla bug number 229231 causes YaST2 to hang in the printer database.
Go to RPMfind.net and select the download for
yast2-printer-2.14.17-6.

yast2-printer-2.14.17-6.src.rpm download

The rpm can be downloaded from download.opensuse.org here

I couldn't find it on RPMfind.net, but it maybe that it isn't on all the mirrors yet. I haven't tried it yet, but I'll post a note when I have.

Update
That didn't work. The rpm downloaded OK, installed with zen, and all the messages said it was OK, but trying to open YaST and select Hardware > Printer it hangs at 4%. Has to use Kill to stop it.

Update 2
Removed /var/lib/YaST2/ppd_db.ycp, and removed the installed yast2-printer-2.14.17-3.2, and installed smart. Then installed yast2-printer-2.14.17-3.i685 with smart, the used YaSt to re-install my network printer, which is on an FC6 box. I set it with no sharing and no local filtering, via an SMB share (I have to provide access for Win98 & XP) and the test worked fine, so I have my network printing back.

I still don't know why installing the downloaded yast2-printer-2.14.17-6.rpm didn't work, but this workaround works fine.

alvez 01-15-2007 06:14 PM

I installed the i586 rpm and it worked fine. Printing is up and running again.

opensuse 10.2 printing broke

In reply to the above 2 posts I simply put yast2-printer-2.14.17 in Google and went straight to the download at Rpmfind.net.
I have just tried again and whilst it appears on the Google page, I cannot find it again on the Rpmfind.net site. This is very strange.
As Alvez has pointed out above just use the opensuse link which he refers to.

sadiqdm 01-16-2007 06:58 AM

beachboy2 - I think the RPMfind.net site looks at the nearest mirrors. I tried it again late last night and it gave me a different answer. The first couple of times I tried I got mirrors in France, but last night one was in Germany.

I have been running with the yast2-printer...17-3.i586 version and it fired up OK this morning. The zen updater wanted to upgrade me to ...17-6 again. This didn't work yesterday. Has anyone done this update, and does it work?

sadiqdm 01-16-2007 08:29 AM

Update

I didn't look carefully enough yesterday. The file I downloaded was
Code:

yast2-printer-2.14.17-6.src.rpm
and it should have been
Code:

yast2-printer-2.14.17-6.i586.rpm
I downloaded and installed the correct file and all is now well and zen has stopped bugging me. ;) Thanks for the help.

That rpm worked on my desktop and laptop with opensuse 10.2, running cups 1.2.7-3.3

thanx for the link alvez
